Essential Oil Distillation Plants

Mechotech designs and manufactures industrial steam, hydro (hydrodistillation), vacuum, and pressure distillation plants, as well as cold-press (expression) extractors for oil-rich feedstock such as citrus peel, for the full spectrum of aromatic feedstocks — engineered for commercial and export-scale essential oil production for aromatherapy, fragrance, perfumery, and flavour applications, not small-batch or hobbyist use.

Manufacturing Process

1

Raw Material Preparation

Aromatic raw material is cleaned, sorted, and (where required) comminuted to the particle size best suited to the feedstock, to maximise oil release during distillation or cold-press expression.

2

Charging & Distillation / Expression

The prepared charge is loaded into the SS 316L still and distilled by steam, hydro, vacuum, or pressure distillation — or, for oil-rich feedstock such as citrus peel, processed by cold-press (expression) instead, since no heat is involved.

3

Condensation

Vapours from the distillation route pass through efficient condensation, condensing the volatile oil and hydrosol together.

4

Oil–Water Separation

Condensate is separated in a stainless-steel Florentine flask; the essential oil is collected while the hydrosol is drawn off and can be recovered as a co-product.

5

Polishing & Drying

The crude oil is polish-filtered and dried to remove residual moisture.

6

Quality Control

Each batch is verified against physical and analytical parameters before release, supported by full batch documentation.

Applications

  • Aromatherapy, fragrance, and perfumery applications
  • Food, flavour, and beverage applications
  • Pharmaceutical and nutraceutical ingredient supply
  • Cosmetic and personal care active ingredients
  • Export to regulated-market ingredient buyers

Key Features

  • SS 316L Construction

All product-contact surfaces are SS 316L for corrosion resistance and product purity, with CIP capability between batches.

  • Efficient Condensation & Florentine Separation

Efficient condensation paired with a stainless-steel Florentine flask maximises oil recovery and cleanly separates the essential oil from the hydrosol.

  • Steam / Hydro / Vacuum / Pressure / Cold-Press

Each plant is configured for the distillation mode — or, for oil-rich feedstock, the cold-press expression route — best suited to the target feedstock and oil.

  • Hydrosol Recovery

Integrated separation allows recovery of the aromatic hydrosol as a saleable co-product, improving plant economics.

  • GMP-Compliant PLC Automation

PLC-based automation and CIP capability across a GMP-compliant build support repeatable, documented commercial-scale production.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between steam distillation and hydro distillation?
In steam distillation, steam is passed through the raw material without direct contact with boiling water, which suits delicate or heat-sensitive feedstock. In hydro distillation (hydrodistillation), the material is submerged and boiled directly in water, which can suit denser or more heat-tolerant material. Mechotech engineers each plant around the feedstock and target oil to determine the right method.
How does an industrial essential oil distillation plant work?
Raw aromatic material is loaded into the still, heated with steam or water to vaporise the volatile oil, and the vapour is condensed and separated in a stainless-steel Florentine flask into essential oil and hydrosol. Mechotech's turnkey plants integrate this process with efficient condensation and oil-water separation, engineered and commissioned as a complete system.
Which distillation method is best for essential oils?
There is no single best method — it depends on the feedstock's heat sensitivity, oil volatility, and desired hydrosol yield. Mechotech designs the distillation method (steam, hydro, vacuum, or pressure) around the specific aromatic material and the client's target output. For oil-rich feedstock such as citrus peel, a cold-press (expression) extractor is used instead of distillation, since no heat is involved.
What is the difference between an industrial distillation plant and a small-scale distiller?
Mechotech's essential oil distillation plants are engineered for commercial and industrial-scale production — turnkey systems built GMP-compliant in SS 316L, with PLC-based automation, CIP (clean-in-place) capability, and full documentation — rather than the small-batch equipment used for home or hobbyist distillation.
Should I choose a batch or continuous distillation plant?
Batch distillation suits multi-product operations processing different feedstocks or oils in sequence, while continuous distillation suits high-volume, single-feedstock production. Mechotech engineers each plant around your feedstock mix, target throughput, and investment scale — see our batch vs continuous plant comparison for the general trade-offs, which apply to distillation as well as solvent extraction.
What is the difference between an essential oil distillation plant and a spice oleoresin extraction plant?
Essential oil is only the volatile aromatic fraction of a plant, recovered by distillation (or cold pressing for oil-rich feedstock) — it does not include the non-volatile flavour, colour, and pungency compounds. A spice oleoresin is a broader solvent extract that captures both the volatile oil and the non-volatile compounds, giving a more complete flavour and colour profile used mainly in food and flavour applications. If you need the complete oleoresin rather than the volatile oil alone, see our spices oleoresin extraction plant range.
What does an essential oil distillation plant cost?
Cost depends on the distillation method (steam, hydro, vacuum, or pressure, or a cold-press extractor for oil-rich feedstock), batch or continuous configuration, and target throughput, so we don't quote a fixed price without those details. Share your feedstock and target output through a project consultation and we'll provide a project-specific quotation.
Who manufactures essential oil distillation plants and equipment?
Mechotech is an essential oil distillation plant manufacturer and equipment supplier, engineering and fabricating turnkey steam, hydro, vacuum, and pressure distillation plants — and cold-press extractors for oil-rich feedstock — at our Hyderabad facility for buyers in India and export markets.
