Jacketed Reactor Reaction / Synthesis Equipment — Mechotech

Jacketed Reactor

A jacketed reactor is an agitated reaction vessel with a second shell, the jacket, around the vessel wall. A hot or cold medium circulates through the jacket to heat or cool the batch, so the temperature can be raised, held or reduced without opening the vessel. Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey jacketed reactors in SS 316L (or a process-appropriate grade) for pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food and botanical process lines that need controlled heating or cooling during reaction or processing.

The vessel is an SS 316L (or process-appropriate grade) shell with an external jacket, fitted with an agitator drive, a feed inlet, a vapour outlet and a product outlet, and a pressure gauge. The jacket has a hot/cold media inlet and outlet; the heating or cooling medium is configured to the process. A control panel offers temperature control, agitation control, pressure monitoring, recipe management and data logging and reports, and CIP / SIP readiness is available as an option. Electropolished product-contact surfaces support cleaning between batches. Capacity, materials and ancillaries are configured to requirement and established during process development and pilot validation.

Manufacturing Process

1

Charging

Raw materials and solvents are charged through the feed inlet.

2

Agitation & Mixing

The agitator keeps the contents mixed so heat is distributed through the batch.

3

Heating or Cooling

Hot or cold media circulating through the jacket inlet and outlet bring the batch to, and hold it at, the process temperature under recipe control.

4

Reaction or Processing

The batch runs under monitored temperature, agitation and pressure, with vapour leaving through the vapour outlet to a condenser where the process needs one.

5

Discharge

The finished batch is discharged through the product outlet.

6

Clean-in-Place

Where CIP / SIP-ready connections are fitted, the vessel is cleaned between batches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Mechotech supply the complete Jacketed Reactor?
Yes. Mechotech engineers and fabricates the complete Jacketed Reactor at its Hyderabad facility, then installs and commissions it as a single integrated system, with documentation to support GMP and regulatory qualification. Final parameters are established during process development and pilot validation.
What is a jacketed reactor and when is it used?
A jacketed reactor is an agitated vessel with an external jacket through which a heating or cooling medium circulates. It is used where a batch must be heated, held or cooled to a controlled temperature during a reaction or processing step, without opening the vessel.
How does the jacket control temperature?
Hot or cold media enter the jacket through the jacket inlet, pass around the vessel wall and leave through the jacket outlet, transferring heat to or from the batch while the agitator keeps the contents mixed. The control system adjusts temperature against the recipe, and the heating or cooling medium is configured to the process.
How does the Jacketed Reactor differ from the other reactors Mechotech lists?
The Chemical Reactor is the general agitated reaction vessel and also has a jacket; this page concentrates on the jacketed temperature-control duty. The Glass-Lined Reactor adds a glass surface for aggressive acids and alkalis, and the High-Pressure Reactor is pressure-rated for reactions above atmospheric pressure. The choice is made against the actual chemistry and operating conditions.
Which related reactors does Mechotech list?
What controls does the Jacketed Reactor have?
The control system offers temperature control, agitation control, pressure monitoring, recipe management and data logging and reports, with CIP / SIP readiness as an option. The final configuration is set to the client’s process.
What capacities are available for the Jacketed Reactor?
Mechotech builds jacketed reactors from pilot units for process validation to larger commercial installations. Vessel volume, jacket duty, agitation and ancillaries are configured to the confirmed batch size and process; we recommend a pilot unit to validate parameters before scaling.
What information is needed to specify a Jacketed Reactor?
To configure the vessel Mechotech needs the process chemistry and materials involved, the batch size, the temperature range and heating or cooling duty, the heating or cooling medium available, the mixing duty, whether vapour must be condensed and the hygiene and documentation requirements. A pilot unit is recommended before scaling.
