Vertical Percolation-Type Extraction Extraction Equipment — Mechotech

Vertical Percolation-Type Extraction

Mechotech engineers and manufactures the Percolation Extractor as turnkey process equipment for pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food, and botanical extraction lines that recover compounds by passing solvent through a static bed of solid material. Feed is loaded into a vertical column and solvent percolates downward (or is recirculated) through the settled bed, dissolving target compounds as it passes, rather than the solids being continuously conveyed as in Mechotech's Continuous Extractor. Each unit is designed around the client's specific process parameters and target output, then fabricated, installed, and commissioned by Mechotech as a single accountable scope.

The Percolation Extractor is built in SS 316L (or a process-appropriate grade) as a vertical column vessel, with electropolished product-contact surfaces and integrated instrumentation so it can be cleaned in place between batches and operated under PLC-based control. Feed material is loaded and settled as a static bed within the column, and solvent is introduced at the top (or base, for upflow operation) so it percolates through the bed under gravity or pump-assisted flow, contacting the solids and drawing target compounds into solution as it travels through the bed depth. Because the bed itself is static rather than mechanically conveyed, percolation is well suited to feedstocks that retain their structure and porosity through extraction; where the feed must move continuously through multiple stages, Mechotech's Continuous or Counter-Current Extractor is the better fit. Capacity is configured to the customer's requirement, from pilot-scale systems for process validation to larger commercial installations with modular expansion, and every unit is delivered with full documentation to support GMP and regulatory qualification.

Manufacturing Process

1

Bed Loading

Prepared feed material is loaded into the vertical column and settled to form a static bed of consistent depth.

2

Solvent Introduction

Solvent is introduced at the top of the column (or at the base for upflow operation) to begin percolating through the settled bed.

3

Percolation Through the Bed

Solvent travels through the bed depth under gravity or pump-assisted flow, contacting the solids and dissolving target compounds as it percolates.

4

Miscella Drawoff

Solvent-and-extract solution (miscella) is drawn off from the base of the column once it has percolated through the full bed depth.

5

Recirculation (where configured)

Drawn-off miscella can be recirculated back over the bed for repeated passes to increase extraction, depending on the target yield and feedstock.

6

Bed Discharge

The spent, solvent-wet bed is discharged from the column once the batch has reached its target extraction level, and the column is cleaned in place for the next charge.

Key Features

  • Static Bed Percolation

Solvent percolates through a settled, static bed of feed material, suiting feedstocks that retain their structure and porosity through extraction.

  • Hygienic Construction

Electropolished SS 316L product-contact surfaces, with the column cleaned in place (CIP) between batches and documentation to support GMP qualification.

  • Turnkey Engineering

Design, fabrication, installation, and commissioning are delivered as one accountable scope, so the client deals with a single engineering team from drawing to handover.

  • Scalable Capacity

The extractor is sized to the customer's requirement, from pilot-scale validation through to commercial capacity, with modular expansion as production grows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Percolation Extractor and how does it work?
A Percolation Extractor loads feed material as a static bed inside a vertical column and passes solvent through that settled bed under gravity or pump-assisted flow, dissolving target compounds as the solvent percolates through the bed depth and is drawn off at the base as miscella.
How is percolation different from Mechotech's Continuous Extractor?
In percolation the feed bed is static while solvent percolates through it; in Mechotech's Continuous-Type Extraction, the solids themselves are continuously conveyed through a series of extraction stages while solvent moves counter-current to them. Percolation suits feedstocks that hold their structure and porosity well as a settled bed.
Does Mechotech supply the complete Percolation Extractor?
Yes. Mechotech engineers and fabricates the complete Percolation Extractor at its Hyderabad facility, then installs and commissions it as a single integrated system, with documentation to support GMP and regulatory qualification. Final parameters are established during process design and pilot validation.
What capacities are available for the Percolation Extractor?
Mechotech builds the Percolation Extractor from pilot units for process validation to larger commercial installations. Column size, bed depth and ancillaries are configured to the confirmed batch size and feed; a pilot trial on the actual feedstock is recommended before scaling.
Which industries use the Percolation Extractor?
The catalogue lists the Percolation Extractor for pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food and botanical extraction lines. The feedstock, solvent and target specification are confirmed with the client before the unit is configured.
How does percolation differ from the Batch and Rotary Extractors?
In percolation the feed bed is static while solvent percolates through it. The Batch-Type Extraction and the Horizontal Rotary-Type Extraction are separate extraction-equipment pages for other contacting arrangements, and the Continuous-Type Extraction conveys the solids through stages. The right extractor depends on how the feedstock behaves in the solvent and is confirmed by trials.
What information is needed to specify a Percolation Extractor?
To configure the column Mechotech needs the feedstock and its particle size and porosity, the solvent, the batch size, the target extraction level, whether downflow or upflow and recirculation are wanted, and the hygiene and documentation requirements. A pilot trial on the actual feedstock is recommended.
