Fractional Distillation Unit Distillation Equipment — Mechotech

Fractional Distillation Unit

Mechotech designs and manufactures the Fractional Distillation Unit as turnkey multi-stage separation equipment for pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food, flavour, and botanical processing lines that must resolve a mixture into several distinct, closely-spaced-boiling fractions rather than the single cut a simple pot still delivers. A packed or trayed fractionating column adds many vapour-liquid contact stages above the reboiler, and controlled reflux is returned down the column so that each stage re-enriches the rising vapour in the more volatile component — giving far sharper separation between components whose boiling points lie close together than a once-through simple distillation can achieve.

In operation, the feed is vaporised in the reboiler and the vapour rises through packing or trays while a portion of the overhead condensate is returned as reflux, so vapour and liquid repeatedly contact, exchange heat and mass, and progressively concentrate the lower-boiling fraction toward the top of the column while heavier components collect toward the base. Adjusting the reflux ratio and drawing off intermediate side-cuts lets the same column separate a feed into light, middle, and heavy fractions in a single campaign, with higher reflux and more stages trading throughput for sharper resolution between close-boiling components. Mechotech builds the column, reboiler, condensers, and reflux-control circuit in SS 316L (or a process-appropriate grade) with electropolished product-contact surfaces, CIP capability, and PLC-based control of reflux ratio, temperature profile, and cut-point sequencing, with capacity and column configuration engineered to the customer's feed chemistry and separation target.

Manufacturing Process

1

Feed Charging & Heating

The feed mixture is charged to the reboiler and heated to its boiling range, generating a continuous vapour stream to feed the column.

2

Vapour Rise Through the Column

Vapour ascends through structured packing or trays, contacting descending liquid at each stage and progressively enriching in the more volatile components.

3

Reflux Return

A metered portion of the overhead condensate is returned to the top of the column as reflux, sharpening the separation between close-boiling fractions with each additional contact stage.

4

Multi-Stage Vapour-Liquid Contact

Repeated vaporisation and condensation across the packing or trays builds a composition gradient along the column height, separating the mixture far more finely than a single-stage still.

5

Overhead Condensation

The lightest fraction is condensed at the column head and drawn off as the first distillate cut once it reaches the target purity.

6

Intermediate Side-Cut Collection

Where the feed contains three or more distinct fractions, side-draws at intermediate column heights collect middle-boiling cuts to their own receivers.

7

Reflux Ratio Adjustment

Reflux ratio is adjusted through the run to trade throughput against cut sharpness as the still composition depletes and the boiling point of the residual charge rises.

8

Bottoms Discharge & Column Turnaround

The heavy residue is drained from the reboiler, the column is flushed, and the system is prepared for the next charge or feed campaign.

Applications

  • Separation of multi-component botanical and essential-oil distillates into defined fractions
  • Splitting solvent blends into individual close-boiling components for reuse
  • Fractionation of flavour and fragrance intermediates into light, middle, and heavy cuts
  • Pharmaceutical intermediate purification requiring multiple sequential cuts

Key Features

  • Multi-Stage Column Separation

Packed or trayed internals provide many vapour-liquid contact stages, resolving close-boiling components that a single-stage still cannot separate cleanly.

  • Controlled Reflux for Sharper Cuts

An adjustable reflux ratio lets the same column be tuned between high-throughput operation and high-purity, sharply separated fractions.

  • Multiple Simultaneous Fraction Cuts

Overhead and side-draw take-offs allow light, middle, and heavy fractions to be collected separately within a single distillation campaign.

  • GMP-Compliant Construction

Electropolished SS 316L product-contact surfaces meet WHO-GMP and Schedule M requirements, and the column and reboiler are cleaned in place (CIP) between batches.

  • PLC-Based Reflux & Cut-Point Control

Reflux ratio, column temperature profile, and cut sequencing are managed under automated control for repeatable fraction quality batch to batch.

  • Scalable, Turnkey Delivery

Column height, packing/tray count, and reboiler duty are sized to the customer's requirement, from pilot columns for process development to larger commercial installations, delivered as design, fabrication, installation, and commissioning in one accountable scope.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Fractional Distillation Unit and how is it different from simple distillation?
A Fractional Distillation Unit separates a multi-component mixture using a packed or trayed column with reflux, giving many vapour-liquid contact stages instead of the single evaporation-condensation step of a simple still. That extra staging is what allows it to resolve components whose boiling points are close together into distinct, cleaner fractions — separation that a simple still cannot achieve.
How does reflux improve the separation?
A portion of the overhead condensate is returned to the top of the column as reflux instead of being drawn off as product. This descending liquid contacts rising vapour at every stage, and the vapour becomes progressively richer in the more volatile component with each contact — so a higher reflux ratio produces sharper, purer cuts at the cost of lower throughput.
Can the unit produce more than two fractions in one run?
Yes. Beyond the overhead take-off, intermediate side-draws at different column heights allow middle-boiling fractions to be collected separately, so a single campaign can deliver light, middle, and heavy cuts rather than just one distillate and one residue.
What feed materials and mixtures suit fractional distillation?
It suits any liquid mixture whose components need to be separated into multiple distinct boiling-range fractions — multi-component botanical distillates, solvent blends recovered from process operations, flavour and fragrance intermediates, and fatty-acid or ester blends are common examples. Feedstock chemistry determines column height, packing/tray selection, and reflux requirement.
How does a Fractional Distillation Unit compare with a Solvent Recovery Distillation Plant?
A Solvent Recovery Distillation Plant is typically built to recover and purify a single solvent for reuse, often as a simpler single- or multi-stage still. A Fractional Distillation Unit is built where the feed itself must be split into two or more distinct fractions, so it carries a taller column, more contact stages, and a controlled reflux system to hit that sharper multi-cut separation.
What capacity and configuration can Mechotech deliver?
Column height, packing or tray count, reboiler duty, and reflux system are configured to the feed chemistry, number of fractions required, and target throughput, from pilot columns for process development to larger commercial installations. We recommend validating the distillation curve on a pilot unit before scaling to commercial capacity.
Does Mechotech deliver the Fractional Distillation Unit as a turnkey system?
Yes. Mechotech engineers, fabricates, installs, and commissions the complete column, reboiler, condensers, and control system as a single accountable scope, with documentation to support GMP and regulatory qualification.
