Resin Adsorption / Desorption System

Resin adsorption and desorption is a purification technology in which a liquid extract is passed through a bed of adsorbent or ion-exchange resin that selectively binds target actives or impurities, which are then released in a controlled desorption step. In an extraction or process line it sits after clarification to enrich and purify valuable compounds, remove pigments and unwanted solutes, and concentrate dilute actives into a refined eluate. It is chosen for selective capture of specific molecules, decolorization, and desalting at low thermal load. Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey resin adsorption and desorption systems, supplying complete engineered columns and skids for pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food and botanical extraction industries.

A resin adsorption and desorption system works by loading clarified feed onto a packed resin column where target molecules or impurities adsorb onto the resin by hydrophobic interaction, ion exchange or size selectivity, after which a change in solvent, pH or ionic strength desorbs the bound species as a concentrated, purified eluate. This delivers clarity, high purity, effective decolorization, strong recovery, and significant concentration of dilute actives. Product-contact parts are built in SS 304 or SS 316L with hygienic, GMP-oriented design and sanitary flow paths. Systems include PLC-based automation sequencing loading, washing, elution and regeneration, and column volume, resin type and capacity are configured to the client's requirement rather than a fixed model.

Manufacturing Process

1

Resin Conditioning

The packed resin bed is pretreated and equilibrated to the correct pH and ionic state so it is ready to bind the target species selectively.

2

Feed Loading and Adsorption

Clarified extract is passed through the column and target actives or impurities adsorb onto the resin by their specific binding mechanism.

3

Washing

A wash step displaces loosely held impurities and non-target solutes while the target species remain bound to the resin.

4

Desorption / Elution

A change in solvent, pH or ionic strength releases the bound species as a concentrated, purified eluate collected for downstream processing.

5

Fraction Collection

Eluate is collected in cuts so the enriched, high-purity target fraction is separated from weaker leading and trailing portions.

6

Resin Regeneration

The bed is cleaned and regenerated to restore adsorption capacity for the next cycle, maximising resin life.

Key Features

  • Selective Molecular Capture

Adsorbent and ion-exchange resins are chosen to bind specific target actives or impurities, enabling precise, selective purification.

  • Effective Decolorization

Resins strip pigments and coloured bodies from extracts, improving product appearance and downstream purity.

  • Concentration and Enrichment

Controlled desorption releases captured actives into a small, concentrated eluate volume, enriching dilute feeds.

  • Automated Cycle Control

PLC-based automation sequences loading, washing, elution and regeneration for repeatable, operator-independent operation.

  • Hygienic GMP Design

Sanitary SS 304 or SS 316L wetted parts with cleanable flow paths support GMP-oriented manufacturing and CIP.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is resin adsorption / desorption?
It is a purification technology in which a liquid extract is passed through a bed of adsorbent or ion-exchange resin that selectively binds target actives or impurities, which are then released in a controlled desorption step as a concentrated, purified eluate.
How does resin adsorption / desorption work?
Clarified feed is loaded onto a packed resin column where target molecules adsorb by hydrophobic interaction, ion exchange or size selectivity. After washing away loose impurities, a change in solvent, pH or ionic strength desorbs the bound species into a small, concentrated eluate.
Where does resin adsorption / desorption fit in an extraction or purification line?
It sits after clarification and concentration, enriching and purifying valuable compounds, removing pigments and unwanted solutes, and concentrating dilute actives into a refined eluate before final polishing, drying or formulation.
What are the key benefits of resin adsorption / desorption?
It offers selective capture of specific molecules, effective decolorization, desalting, strong recovery, and significant concentration of dilute actives, all at low thermal load that protects heat-sensitive compounds.
What capacity of resin system can Mechotech supply?
Column volume, resin type and throughput are configured to the client's feed and purity requirement rather than a fixed model, and Mechotech recommends pilot trials to confirm binding capacity, elution and regeneration parameters before scaling.
What materials and compliance standards apply?
Product-contact parts are built in SS 304 or SS 316L with sanitary, cleanable, GMP-oriented design and CIP capability suitable for pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and food processing.
Does Mechotech supply the resin adsorption / desorption plant as a turnkey system?
Yes. Mechotech designs, fabricates, installs and commissions the complete resin adsorption and desorption skid as a single accountable turnkey scope, integrated with the surrounding extraction or process line.
