MEE – Multiple Effect Evaporator

A multiple effect evaporator (MEE) is a train of linked evaporator vessels, called effects. Fresh steam heats the first effect; the vapour generated there becomes the heating medium for the next effect, which runs at a lower pressure and temperature, and so on down the train. The same heat is therefore reused across several stages instead of being discharged after a single pass. Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey MEE systems for pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food and botanical process lines that need continuous concentration of extracts and liquors with a lower fresh-steam demand than a single-effect evaporator. The number and type of effects are configured to the feed and the evaporation duty.

Each MEE is built as a series of evaporator vessels and interconnecting vapour piping in SS 316L (or a process-appropriate grade), with electropolished product-contact surfaces, a condenser and, where the process runs under vacuum, a vacuum system. The effects may be falling-film, rising-film, forced-circulation or a mixed arrangement, chosen from the viscosity, heat sensitivity and fouling tendency of the feed. Instrumentation and PLC-based control are integrated at assembly, the product-contact circuit can be cleaned in place between batches, and the unit is delivered with documentation to support qualification. The number of effects, heat-transfer area, capacity and utilities are configured to the client's requirement and confirmed during process design and pilot validation; no fixed figures are quoted on this page.

Manufacturing Process

1

Feed Delivery

The feed is pumped into the evaporator train; the feed routing through the effects is configured to the duty.

2

First-Effect Evaporation

Fresh steam heats the first effect, the liquid boils and vapour is generated.

3

Vapour Reuse

Instead of being discharged, the vapour from one effect heats the next effect, which operates at a lower pressure and temperature, so the heat is reused down the train.

4

Vapour-Liquid Separation

In each effect the vapour is separated from the partly concentrated liquid before it passes on.

5

Final Concentration & Discharge

The product reaches the target concentration in the last effect and is discharged for further processing, such as drying or blending.

6

Condensation & Condensate Recovery

Vapour leaving the last effect is condensed, under vacuum where the process uses it, and the condensate is collected; whether it is reused depends on the application and its quality.

7

Clean-in-Place

The product-contact circuit is cleaned in place between runs.

Key Features

  • Vapour Reuse Across Effects

Vapour from each effect heats the next, which lowers the fresh steam needed compared with a single-effect evaporator; the saving depends on the number of effects and the duty.

  • Effect Type Matched to the Feed

Falling-film, rising-film, forced-circulation or mixed effects are chosen from the viscosity, heat sensitivity and fouling behaviour of the feed.

  • Hygienic Construction

SS 316L (or process-appropriate grade) with electropolished product-contact surfaces and a CIP-capable circuit, with documentation to support GMP qualification.

  • Instrumented Control

PLC-based control with integrated instrumentation for temperature, pressure or vacuum and level.

  • Turnkey Engineering

Design, fabrication, installation and commissioning are delivered as one accountable scope.

  • Scalable Capacity

Configured from pilot scale to commercial duty, with modular expansion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Mechotech supply the complete MEE Multiple Effect Evaporator?
Yes. Mechotech engineers and fabricates the complete MEE at its Hyderabad facility, then installs and commissions it as a single integrated system, with documentation to support GMP and regulatory qualification. Final parameters are established during process design and pilot validation.
What is a multiple effect evaporator and how does it work?
A multiple effect evaporator is a series of linked evaporators, called effects. Fresh steam heats the first effect and the vapour it generates heats the second, which operates at a lower pressure and temperature, and so on. Reusing the vapour in this way means less fresh steam is needed than when each evaporator is run on its own.
Why choose an MEE instead of a single-effect evaporator?
An MEE reuses vapour heat across its effects, so it is chosen for continuous, larger-volume concentration where steam consumption matters. The saving depends on the number of effects, the feed and the duty, so no figure is quoted here; it is worked out during process design. A single-effect or Vacuum Evaporator can be the simpler choice for small or varied batches.
Which types of evaporator can be used as the effects?
The effects can be falling-film, rising-film, forced-circulation or a mixed arrangement. Free-flowing, non-fouling and heat-sensitive feeds suit a Falling Film Evaporator; fouling, scaling or crystallising feeds suit a Forced Circulation Evaporator; a Rising-Film Evaporator suits lower-viscosity duties. The choice follows the viscosity, heat sensitivity and fouling tendency of the feed.
How many effects does an MEE need?
The number of effects is configured to the evaporation duty, the feed and the steam and investment targets. More effects reduce steam use but add vessels and cost, so the number is set by economics during process design rather than chosen as a maximum.
How does an MEE differ from an MVR evaporator?
An MEE reuses vapour across several linked vessels, while an MVR Evaporator recompresses its own vapour with a compressor or blower and returns it as the heating medium. The better fit depends on the steam and electric-power supply, the feed and the duty, and is decided during process design.
What capacities are available for the MEE?
Mechotech builds MEE systems from pilot units for process validation to larger commercial installations. Number of effects, heat-transfer area and ancillaries are configured to the confirmed evaporation duty; a pilot trial on the actual feed is recommended before committing to full-scale sizing.
What information is needed to specify an MEE?
To configure the train Mechotech needs the feed composition, solids content and viscosity, any scaling or crystallising tendency, the heat sensitivity of the product, the target concentration, the evaporation rate, the steam and cooling utilities available and the cleaning and documentation requirements.
