Glass-Lined Reactor

Glass-Lined Reactor
A glass-lined reactor is an agitated reaction vessel whose internal product-contact surface is a glass lining fused to a steel shell. The lining gives strong resistance to acids, alkalis and other aggressive process media that would corrode bare metal, and keeps the product clear of metal contact, which supports product purity. Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey glass-lined reactors for pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food and botanical process lines that handle corrosive or highly reactive media.
The vessel is a steel shell with glass fused to its internal surface, fitted with an agitator drive, a feed inlet, a vapour outlet and a product outlet, and temperature control through a jacket as configured. Instrumentation for temperature and agitation supports operation under PLC-based control, and CIP / SIP connections can be provided as an option. The limits of the glass lining — for example thermal shock and certain aggressive media — are reviewed against the client’s process during design. Capacity is configured to requirement and established during process development and pilot validation.

Plant Capacities
| Scale | Typical Duty | Configuration |
|---|---|---|
| Pilot | Process validation and small-batch reactions on the actual media | Small vessel with agitator, jacket and instrumentation |
| Production | Plant-scale batch reactions | Medium vessel with agitator, jacket, condenser and control panel as required |
| Large commercial | High-throughput batch reactions | Large vessel and ancillaries sized to the duty |
Vessel volume, agitation and ancillaries are configured to the process media and batch size; a pilot trial on the actual media is recommended before scaling.
Manufacturing Process
Charging
Raw materials and solvents are charged through the feed inlet.
Agitation & Mixing
The agitator mixes the contents while the glass lining keeps the media out of contact with the steel shell.
Heating or Cooling
The jacket brings the batch to and holds it at the process temperature, as configured.
Reaction
The reaction runs under monitored temperature and agitation, with vapour leaving through the vapour outlet to a condenser where required.
Discharge
The finished batch is discharged through the product outlet.
Clean-in-Place
The vessel is cleaned between batches using CIP connections, where fitted.
