Hydro Distillation Plant

Hydro Distillation Plant
Hydro distillation is a classical essential-oil recovery method in which botanical feedstock is fully immersed in water and brought to a gentle boil, so the volatile oil compounds co-distil with the water vapour and are carried overhead for condensation. Because the material is surrounded by water, the charge is protected from direct overheating, which makes the technique especially suited to delicate flowers, fine powders, ground spices and materials that would otherwise cake or scorch. It is a proven route for high-value floral and aromatic oils where gentleness and complete wetting of the charge are important. Mechotech designs and manufactures complete turnkey hydro distillation systems, engineered around the feedstock, batch size and target oil specification.
In a hydro distillation plant, the botanical charge is submerged in water inside a jacketed or steam-heated distillation still and heated until the mixture boils gently. The volatile aroma constituents co-distil with the water vapour and rise through the vapour line to a water-cooled condenser, where the mixture is liquefied and then decanted in a stainless oil-water separator. Full immersion buffers the material against hot metal surfaces, giving a mild thermal profile that protects fragile floral and powdered feedstock, while controlled heating manages energy use across the cycle. Product-contact parts are fabricated in SS 304 / SS 316L with hygienic finishes, paired with shell-and-tube condensers and Florentine separators for clean oil-water splitting. PLC/SCADA automation regulates heating, temperature and cycle time, and capacity is configured to requirement from pilot to commercial scale.

Manufacturing Process
Charge Preparation
Delicate flowers, powders, ground spices or comminuted botanicals are prepared and weighed for a uniform, fully wettable charge.
Water Immersion
The feedstock is fully immersed in water inside the distillation still, ensuring the material is surrounded and protected from direct heat.
Controlled Heating
The still is heated through a jacket or steam coil to bring the water-and-charge mixture to a gentle, controlled boil.
Co-distillation
Volatile oil compounds co-distil with the water vapour and are released from the boiling charge as a combined aroma-bearing vapour.
Condensation
The vapour is directed through a water-cooled shell-and-tube condenser and returned to a two-phase liquid of essential oil and aromatic water.
Oil-Water Separation
The condensate is decanted in a stainless Florentine separator, dividing the essential oil from the hydrosol by density.
Collection & Hydrosol Recovery
The essential oil is collected and polished, and the aromatic water is recovered as a hydrosol co-product or returned to process.
Applications
- Essential oil recovery from delicate flowers such as rose and jasmine
- Distillation of fine powders and ground spice material

Key Features
Gentle Full-Immersion Processing
Surrounding the charge with water protects fragile flowers and powders from hot surfaces and scorching, preserving natural oil character.
Ideal for Fine & Powdered Feedstock
Complete wetting prevents caking and channelling, making the method well suited to material that resists steam-only distillation.
SS 304 / SS 316L Construction
Product-contact surfaces are fabricated in stainless steel with hygienic finishes suited to floral, flavour and pharma duty.
Efficient Condensation & Separation
Matched condensers and stainless Florentine separators give clean oil-water splitting and consistent recovery.
PLC/SCADA Automation
Automated control of heating, temperature and cycle time delivers repeatable batches with reduced operator dependency.
Turnkey & Configurable
Mechotech engineers capacity from pilot to commercial scale and delivers design, fabrication, installation and commissioning.
