Thin Film Evaporator (TFE) Evaporation Equipment — Mechotech

Thin Film Evaporator (TFE)

Mechotech engineers and manufactures the Thin Film Evaporator (TFE) as turnkey process equipment for the fast, gentle concentration of heat-sensitive liquids. The feed is spread as a thin, continuously renewed film on a heated vessel wall, so evaporation is rapid and the time the product spends on the heated surface is short. Mechotech lists the thin-film evaporator on its equipment slide alongside the falling-film evaporator, multiple-effect evaporator, spray dryer, freeze dryer and molecular distillation unit, and its Forced Circulation Evaporator page says thin-film and wiped-film evaporators use mechanical wiping for viscous, heat-sensitive liquids. The unit is designed around the client’s feed, throughput and target concentration, then fabricated, installed and commissioned by Mechotech as a single scope.

The Thin Film Evaporator is built in SS 316L (or a process-appropriate grade) around a heated vessel wall on which the feed is spread as a thin, continuously renewed film, with a vapour outlet to a condenser and a concentrate discharge, as Mechotech’s illustration shows with a drive motor at the top of the evaporator column. Electropolished product-contact surfaces, CIP connections and PLC-based control support operation under vacuum or at atmospheric pressure, depending on the heat sensitivity of the product. How the film is renewed, mechanically or otherwise, and the heating medium are confirmed in design. Capacity is configured to the customer’s requirement, and the unit is delivered with full documentation to support GMP qualification.

Manufacturing Process

1

Feed Introduction

The feed is pumped to the evaporator and distributed onto the heated wall.

2

Thin-Film Formation

The feed is spread into a thin, continuously renewed film on the heated vessel wall.

3

Evaporation

The film evaporates rapidly, with a short time on the heated surface; under vacuum the boiling point is lowered to protect heat-sensitive product.

4

Vapour Handling

Vapour leaves through the vapour outlet to the condenser, where it is condensed; a vacuum system maintains the pressure where vacuum is used.

5

Concentrate Discharge

The concentrate is discharged from the base of the evaporator to storage or the next process step.

6

CIP & Changeover

The evaporator and connecting lines are cleaned in place between batches or product changeovers.

Key Features

  • Short Residence Time

A thin, continuously renewed film on a heated wall keeps the time the product spends on the hot surface short.

  • Gentle Concentration under Vacuum

Vacuum operation lowers the boiling point, which protects heat-sensitive feeds.

  • Mechanically Assisted Film Renewal

Mechotech’s sibling pages describe mechanical wiping for thin-film and wiped-film evaporators; the mechanism for a given unit is confirmed in design.

  • SS 316L, CIP-Capable, PLC Control

Electropolished SS 316L product-contact surfaces, CIP connections and PLC control support hygienic, repeatable operation.

  • Scalable Capacity

The evaporator is configured to requirement from pilot scale upward, with modular expansion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Mechotech supply the complete Thin Film Evaporator?
Yes. Mechotech is a process equipment manufacturer and supplier, engineering and fabricating the complete Thin Film Evaporator at our Hyderabad facility, installing and commissioning it as a single integrated system, with documentation to support GMP qualification. Final parameters are established during process development and pilot validation.
What capacities are available for the Thin Film Evaporator?
Mechotech builds the Thin Film Evaporator from pilot units for process validation to larger commercial installations. Vessel or unit size, duty and ancillaries are configured to the confirmed throughput or batch size; we recommend a pilot unit to validate parameters before scaling.
Which industries use the Thin Film Evaporator?
The uses listed on this page are given under Applications. The industry, the feed and the target output are confirmed with the client before the equipment is configured.
What is a thin film evaporator?
A thin film evaporator spreads the feed as a thin, continuously renewed film on a heated wall so the liquid evaporates quickly and spends little time on the heated surface. It is used for the gentle concentration of heat-sensitive liquids, and the vapour is condensed and the concentrate discharged.
How does the Thin Film Evaporator differ from the Wiped Film Evaporator?
Mechotech’s Forced Circulation Evaporator page groups the thin-film and wiped-film evaporators together as using mechanical wiping for viscous, heat-sensitive liquids, and its Wiped Film Evaporator page describes rotating wiper blades that renew the film. The sources do not state how a Thin Film Evaporator differs from a wiped film unit, so the two overlap and the film-renewal mechanism for a project is confirmed in design.
How does it differ from the Falling Film and Rising Film evaporators?
In a Falling Film Evaporator the film descends under gravity inside heated tubes, and in a Rising-Film Evaporator it is carried upward by the vapour generated; a thin film evaporator spreads the film on a heated wall. The right design is chosen from the feed’s viscosity, heat sensitivity and fouling tendency.
Does it run under vacuum?
Vacuum operation is available and is normally chosen for heat-sensitive feeds, because lowering the pressure lowers the boiling point; atmospheric operation is available where the process allows. The operating pressure and heating medium are set during process design and are not fixed on this page.
What information is needed to specify a thin film evaporator?
To configure the equipment Mechotech needs the feed and its solids content, viscosity and heat-sensitivity, the starting and target concentration, the evaporation duty, whether the feed contains a solvent that must be recovered, the available heating medium, and the hygiene and documentation requirements. A pilot unit is recommended before scaling.
