Indian Sandal Wood — Extract

Indian Sandal Wood — Extract
Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey wood absolute extraction plants for Indian Sandal Wood (Santalum album). We supply the complete machinery to process Indian sandalwood heartwood into an extract configured to the client’s target specification for the cosmetic, perfumery, aromatherapy and traditional-medicine applications listed for it. Indian sandalwood is described in Mechotech’s legacy catalogue as one of the most precious aromatic woods, known for a rich, creamy and long-lasting fragrance. This page covers the solvent-extraction route; the distillation route is on a separate page.
Mechotech’s Indian Sandal Wood plant is configured around the specific chemistry and processing requirements of Indian Sandal Wood. Built in SS 316L with integrated solvent recovery, automation and full documentation, each plant is delivered as a commissioned turnkey system. Sandalwood oil sits in dense heartwood, so the line is built around chipping or milling the wood, solvent extraction and concentration; the santalols are the listed marker compounds. The final parameters are established during process development and pilot validation.

Manufacturing Process
Raw Material Preparation
Indian sandalwood (Santalum album) heartwood is authenticated, tested for moisture and reduced to chips or powder so that the solvent reaches the oil-bearing wood; the feed form and particle size are set during process development.
Extraction
Milled Indian Sandal Wood is extracted with food-grade solvent (alcohol / aqueous) in closed jacketed SS 316L extractors under controlled temperature and multiple cycles to maximise recovery of the target actives.
Filtration
The extract (miscella) is clarified through a plate-and-frame filter press followed by cartridge polish filters.
Concentration & Solvent Recovery
The miscella is concentrated in a falling-film / vacuum evaporator, with solvent recovered through the condenser return system.
Standardisation
The concentrate is assayed and adjusted to the declared target specification before release.
Quality Control & Release
The standardised Indian Sandal Wood concentrate is released after assay, residual-solvent, heavy-metal, microbial and moisture testing.

Key Features
SS 316L Construction
Electropolished SS 316L product-contact surfaces with CIP operation between batches.
Closed-Loop Solvent Recovery
Integrated condenser-return recovery reuses solvent between batches and reduces solvent loss.
Standardised to Specification
In-process and batch-release assay are used to check the finished extract against the agreed target specification.
Concentrate Finishing & Quality Control
Concentration and finishing are configured for a solvent-extracted aromatic concentrate rather than a spray-dried powder, with batch-release testing and certificate-of-analysis documentation.
Scalable Batch Capacity
Plants are configured to requirement from pilot scale upward, with modular expansion.
