Frankincense / Olibanum

Frankincense / Olibanum
Purity Levels
Essential oil verified by GC-MS and physical parameters; boswellic-acid content not applicable to distilled oil
Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey distillation plants for Frankincense / Olibanum, the aromatic oleo-gum-resin tapped from the bark of Boswellia trees (commercially sourced principally from Boswellia serrata in India and Boswellia sacra/carterii in the Arabian Peninsula and Horn of Africa), producing a steam-distilled essential oil verified by GC-MS. Unlike a seed, leaf or root botanical harvested by agriculture, frankincense resin is collected by tapping incisions in the tree bark and allowing the exuded oleo-gum-resin to air-harden into 'tears' before collection — a genuinely distinct raw-material sourcing method that shapes the entire downstream process. We supply the complete machinery — resin cleaning and sorting, size reduction, steam/hydro distillation, condensation, oil-water separation, polishing and quality control — to convert raw frankincense tears into a consistent, GC-MS-verified essential oil for the fragrance, aromatherapy, and flavour industries.
Mechotech's Frankincense / Olibanum plant is engineered around the real nature of the raw material: a resin, not a milled dried plant part, requiring size reduction of hardened tears followed by distillation rather than solvent-based dissolution to release the volatile oil fraction while leaving the bulk of the non-volatile resin and gum behind. Steam or hydro distillation is selected based on tear size and resin hardness, run long enough to fully liberate the volatile terpene and sesquiterpene fraction without scorching the resin. Built in SS 316L with integrated multi-tube condensers, Florentine-flask oil-water separation, and full documentation, each plant is delivered as a commissioned turnkey system producing an essential oil verified batch-by-batch through GC-MS and physical parameter testing. This is a distinct product line from Mechotech's solvent-extracted Boswellia Serrata Extract plant, which targets a boswellic-acid-standardised nutraceutical powder rather than an aromatic essential oil — buyers should confirm which output format (essential oil vs. boswellic-acid extract) their formulation requires.

| Final Product Form | Essential oil (liquid); hydrosol as co-product |
Plant Capacities
| Plant Scale | Resin Charge Throughput | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| Pilot | Configured to your feedstock and trial plan | Product development, oil-yield validation by resin source |
| Semi-Commercial | Configured between pilot and commercial scale | Contract distillation, scale-up trials |
| Commercial | Configured to raw-material supply and confirmed buyer volume | Export-grade continuous production |
Capacity is configured to raw-resin supply and confirmed buyer volume; oil yield varies meaningfully with Boswellia species, tear size and resin age, so we recommend a pilot run to validate distillation parameters before scaling.
Manufacturing Process
Resin Reception, Sorting & Cleaning
Raw frankincense tears are inspected for species, tear size, colour and age, then cleaned to remove bark fragments, sand and other foreign matter picked up during tapping and collection.
Size Reduction
Hardened resin tears are crushed or comminuted to a controlled particle size, increasing surface area exposed to steam and improving volatile-oil release during distillation.
Charging & Steam/Hydro Distillation
The prepared resin charge is loaded into the SS 316L still and distilled by steam or hydrodistillation — selected for tear hardness and resin age — run for the extended cycle time resin distillation typically requires compared with leaf or seed material.
Condensation
Vapours pass through a high-surface-area multi-tube condenser with chilled-water circulation, condensing the volatile oil together with the aqueous hydrosol fraction.
Oil-Water Separation
Condensate is separated in a stainless-steel Florentine flask; the essential oil is drawn off while the aromatic hydrosol is collected separately as a co-product.
Polishing & Drying
The crude oil is polish-filtered and dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate (or by vacuum) to remove residual moisture and any fine resin particulate.
GC-MS Quality Control
Each batch of frankincense essential oil is verified by GC-MS chemical profiling alongside physical parameters (specific gravity, refractive index, optical rotation) before release, with full certificate-of-analysis documentation.

Key Features
SS 316L Construction
All product-contact surfaces are SS 316L for corrosion resistance and product purity, with CIP capability between batches.
Engineered for Resin, Not Agricultural Plant Matter
The size-reduction and distillation stages are configured for hardened, tapped oleo-gum-resin tears rather than a milled leaf, seed or root — a genuinely distinct raw-material handling requirement compared with most botanical distillation lines.
Efficient Condensation & Hydrosol Recovery
High-surface-area multi-tube condensers with chilled-water circulation maximise oil recovery, while integrated Florentine-flask separation allows the aromatic hydrosol to be recovered as a co-product.
GC-MS-Verified Quality Control
Each batch is released against a GC-MS chemical profile and physical parameters, giving fragrance-house and flavour buyers the chromatographic documentation they require.
Species-Flexible Distillation
Distillation cycle time and mode (steam or hydro) are configurable for the tear hardness and volatility profile of different Boswellia sources (B. serrata, B. sacra, B. carterii).
Scalable Capacity
Plants are configured to requirement from pilot scale upward, with modular expansion.
