Myrrh / Opoponax Resinoid

Myrrh / Opoponax Resinoid
Purity Levels
Solvent-extracted resinoid/absolute; furanosesquiterpenes and related terpenoids as the well-documented resin bioactive class, standardised to customer-declared specification (no fixed assay percentage claimed)
Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey gum & resin extraction plants for Myrrh and Opoponax, processing tapped Commiphora oleo-gum-resin (myrrh from Commiphora myrrha; opoponax from related Commiphora/Opopanax species, depending on regional sourcing) into a solvent-extracted resinoid or absolute. We supply the complete machinery — resin cleaning, size reduction, solvent extraction, filtration, concentration with closed-loop solvent recovery, and standardisation — for the fragrance, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and incense industries. Note: for buyers specifically seeking a steam-distilled myrrh/opoponax essential oil rather than a solvent-extracted resinoid, Mechotech also builds a dedicated resin distillation plant configuration — ask us to confirm which process fits your target product.
Mechotech's Myrrh / Opoponax plant is engineered around the real physical nature of oleo-gum-resin, which is tapped from the bark of Commiphora trees as a hardened exudate rather than harvested like a leaf, seed, or root. Because the raw resin arrives as irregular, waxy, sticky lumps mixed with bark fragments and sand, the line opens with dedicated cleaning, sorting, and controlled size-reduction stages — a genuinely different first step from milling a dried leaf or seed. The resin's dense, waxy structure also means solvent contact and extraction cycles typically run longer and at more closely controlled temperature than a leafy botanical, to fully open the resin matrix and recover the furanosesquiterpene and terpenoid fraction associated with its aroma and bioactivity. Built in SS 316L with closed jacketed extractors, closed-loop solvent recovery, and PLC-based automation, each plant is delivered as a commissioned turnkey system with full batch documentation.

Plant Capacities
| Plant Scale | Resin Throughput | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| Pilot | Configured to your feedstock and trial plan | Product development, solvent-system and yield validation |
| Semi-Commercial | Configured between pilot and commercial scale | Contract processing, scale-up trials |
| Commercial | Configured to raw-material supply and confirmed buyer volume | Export-grade continuous production |
Capacity is configured to raw-resin supply and confirmed buyer volume; we recommend a pilot plant to validate extraction cycle time and solvent recovery on your specific resin lot before scaling, since tapped resin quality varies by origin and harvest season.
Manufacturing Process
Resin Cleaning & Sorting
Tapped Commiphora oleo-gum-resin lumps are inspected and hand/mechanically sorted to remove bark fragments, sand, and foreign matter — a cleaning step specific to tapped resin and distinct from washing a fresh leaf or milling a dried seed.
Controlled Size Reduction
The cleaned resin is broken down and milled to a uniform particle size using equipment configured for its dense, waxy, temperature-sensitive structure, since standard hammer-milling can gum up on soft resin unless cooling and feed rate are controlled.
Solvent Extraction
Milled resin is charged into closed, jacketed SS 316L extractors and extracted with a food-grade solvent system under controlled temperature and multiple, typically longer extraction cycles than a leafy botanical requires, to fully penetrate the dense resin matrix and recover the furanosesquiterpene/terpenoid fraction.
Filtration
The resin miscella is clarified through a plate-and-frame filter press followed by cartridge polish filters to remove residual particulate and waxy sediment.
Concentration & Solvent Recovery
The filtered miscella is concentrated in a falling-film / vacuum evaporator, with closed-loop solvent recovery through the condenser return system.
Standardisation & Quality Control
The concentrated resinoid/absolute is assayed and adjusted to the declared target specification, then released after residual-solvent, heavy-metal, microbial, and moisture testing with full certificate-of-analysis documentation.

Key Features
Dedicated Resin Cleaning & Size Reduction
Purpose-built handling for tapped, waxy oleo-gum-resin — a genuinely different pre-treatment from leaf washing or seed milling — protects downstream extraction efficiency.
GMP Hygienic SS 316L Construction
Electropolished SS 316L product-contact surfaces use GMP hygienic design, with CIP operation between batches.
Extended-Cycle Extraction for Dense Resin
Extraction time and temperature are configured for resin's dense matrix, run longer than a typical leafy-botanical cycle to maximise furanosesquiterpene/terpenoid recovery.
Closed-Loop Solvent Recovery
Integrated recovery returns the majority of solvent per batch for reuse.
Standardised to Specification
In-process and batch-release assay are used to check the finished resinoid against its declared customer specification.
Scalable Batch Capacity
Plants are configured to requirement from pilot scale upward, with modular expansion.
