Clove Bud Oleoresin

Clove Bud Oleoresin
Purity Levels
Eugenol 55–85% w/w
Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey oleoresin extraction plants for Clove Buds (Syzygium aromaticum), processing the dried, unopened flower buds into an oleoresin standardised primarily on eugenol content — the phenylpropanoid that gives clove its characteristic pungent, warm aroma and accounts for the majority of the bud's essential-oil weight, one of the highest single-compound concentrations found in any common spice. Because clove bud's essential-oil yield and eugenol share are both unusually high compared with other spices, the extraction line is set up around efficient recovery of this dominant phenolic fraction, with a lower-value clove-leaf-oil (also eugenol-rich, but coarser and lower-priced) available as a complementary byproduct stream from a separate leaf-processing intake where buyers want to run both raw materials on shared infrastructure. We supply the complete machinery to process clove buds into a consistent, eugenol-standardised oleoresin for the food, flavour, dental, pharmaceutical, and fragrance industries.
Mechotech's Clove Bud oleoresin plant is engineered around eugenol as the dominant target compound: dried clove buds carry an unusually high essential-oil content, and within that oil eugenol alone typically makes up the large majority of the volatile fraction, alongside smaller amounts of eugenyl acetate and β-caryophyllene. This single-compound dominance simplifies standardisation relative to spices whose value depends on a balanced multi-terpene profile (such as cardamom), but eugenol is a reactive phenol that oxidises and discolours under heat, so concentration runs under nitrogen to preserve colour and assay. Clove-leaf oil — distilled or extracted from the tree's leaves rather than the flower bud — carries a broadly similar but lower-value eugenol profile with a coarser, harsher aromatic note, and Mechotech can configure a shared or parallel processing line for buyers who want to run both bud and leaf material through common extraction infrastructure. Built in SS 316L with electropolished product-contact surfaces, closed-loop solvent recovery, and PLC-based automation, each plant is delivered as a commissioned turnkey system engineered to the declared eugenol specification.

Capacity is configured to raw-material supply and confirmed buyer volume; we recommend a pilot plant to validate eugenol recovery and colour-stability parameters before scaling, particularly if a parallel clove-leaf-oil byproduct stream is planned.
Manufacturing Process
Raw Material Cleaning & Size Reduction
Dried clove buds are cleaned of stems and foreign matter, tested for moisture and essential-oil content, and milled to a uniform particle size to maximise solvent contact given clove's unusually high oil-cell density.
Solvent Percolation Extraction
Milled clove buds are charged into closed, jacketed SS 316L extractors and extracted with a food-grade solvent system across multiple percolation cycles to maximise recovery of eugenol, eugenyl acetate, and β-caryophyllene.
Solid-Liquid Separation & Filtration
The miscella is clarified through a plate-and-frame filter press followed by cartridge polish filters, removing bud fibre and particulate ahead of concentration.
Nitrogen-Protected Vacuum Concentration
The filtered miscella is concentrated in a falling-film / vacuum evaporator under a nitrogen blanket, since eugenol is a reactive phenol prone to oxidative discolouration at elevated temperature and prolonged air exposure.
Solvent Recovery
A closed-loop recovery system condenses and recycles the extraction solvent back into production.
Optional Clove-Leaf-Oil Byproduct Processing
Where a buyer supplies clove leaf alongside bud material, a parallel steam-distillation or extraction stream can process the leaves into a lower-value, coarser-aroma eugenol-rich oil on shared infrastructure, improving overall plant utilisation.
Standardisation
The concentrated oleoresin is assayed for eugenol content by GC, with eugenyl acetate and β-caryophyllene profiled as secondary markers, then blended to target the declared 55–85% w/w eugenol specification.
Quality Control & Filling
The finished oleoresin is polish-filtered, tested for residual solvent, heavy metals, and microbial load, and filled into lined, nitrogen-blanketed drums to preserve colour and eugenol assay through storage and export transit.

Key Features
GMP/FSSAI Hygienic SS 316L Construction
Electropolished SS 316L product-contact surfaces use FSSAI and GMP hygienic design, with CIP operation between batches.
Nitrogen-Protected Concentration for Colour Stability
Vacuum concentration under a nitrogen blanket limits oxidative discolouration of eugenol, holding the finished oleoresin's colour and assay within specification.
High-Yield Eugenol Standardisation, 55–85%
In-process and batch-release GC assay are used to check the finished oleoresin against its declared eugenol specification, reflecting clove bud's unusually high single-compound concentration among common spices.
Closed-Loop Solvent Recovery
Integrated recovery returns the extraction solvent for reuse each batch, reducing fresh-solvent consumption.
Optional Clove-Leaf-Oil Byproduct Line
A parallel processing stream can convert lower-value clove leaf into a eugenol-rich byproduct oil on shared plant infrastructure.
Scalable Batch Capacity
Plants are configured to requirement from pilot scale upward, with modular expansion.
