Extraction Technologies
Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey oleoresin extraction plants for Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans), processing the dried kernel of the nutmeg seed into a standardised oleoresin carrying its characteristic essential-oil terpenes — chiefly sabinene, α- and β-pinene, and myristicin — with the aromatic phenylpropanoid myristicin monitored as a quality-control marker rather than a headline claim. Nutmeg kernel is unusual among spices in also containing a substantial fixed-oil (fat) fraction, often called nutmeg butter, which is largely a co-extracted by-product rather than the target actives, so the process includes a de-fatting/separation step that most other spice-oleoresin lines do not need. We supply the complete machinery to process nutmeg kernels into a consistent, quality-controlled oleoresin for the food, flavour, and fragrance industries. Candidate extraction technologies for lignans and nutmeg oleoresin: Counter-Current Extraction (CCE), Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE), Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE), Hybrid Extraction and Microwave-Assisted Extraction (MAE) (5 in total).
Mechotech's Nutmeg oleoresin plant is engineered around a dual-fraction raw material: the dried nutmeg kernel is roughly one-quarter fixed oil (triglycerides, largely trimyristin) by weight alongside its volatile essential-oil fraction, so the extraction and post-processing stages are designed to separate the aromatic, terpene-rich oleoresin from the co-extracted fatty fraction rather than simply concentrating a single miscella as in a straightforward spice extraction. Myristicin, one of nutmeg's characteristic aromatic constituents, carries documented dose-dependent toxicity at high intake, so standardisation includes it as a monitored certificate-of-analysis parameter, supporting buyers managing finished-product dosing rather than simply maximising myristicin content. Built in SS 316L with electropolished product-contact surfaces, closed-loop solvent recovery, and PLC-based automation, each plant is delivered as a commissioned turnkey system configured to the declared volatile-oil specification.

Manufacturing Process
Each extraction method follows a different process — pick a method to see its steps.
Raw-Material Preparation
Nutmeg seeds are cleaned and size-reduced so lignans can be reached by the extraction medium; particle size and moisture are set during process development.
Counter-Current Loading
Prepared nutmeg seeds are fed into a multi-stage solid–liquid counter-current extractor where fresh ethanol/water or a suitable food-grade solvent meets the most-depleted material.
Counter-Current Extraction
Solvent flows against the solids across stages to draw out lignans; bed flow and fines management are verified during pilot work.
Extract (Miscella) Collection
The lignans-bearing miscella is collected from the fresh-feed end while spent solids are discharged from the solvent-entry end.
Concentration & Solvent Recovery
Solvent is removed from the clarified lignans-bearing extract under vacuum and returned through a solvent-recovery loop; recovery performance is confirmed at pilot scale.
Standardisation & Drying
The lignans extract is assayed against the declared target specification and dried or supplied as a concentrate, according to the requirement.
Raw-Material Conditioning
Nutmeg seeds are cleaned and conditioned so nutmeg oleoresin is accessible to supercritical CO₂; moisture and particle size are set during process development.
Extraction Vessel Loading
Conditioned nutmeg seeds are charged into the high-pressure extraction vessel.
Supercritical CO₂ Extraction
Supercritical CO₂ passes through the charge and dissolves nutmeg oleoresin; an ethanol modifier can be evaluated where polar fractions are also required, and operating pressure and temperature are set in process development.
Separator Collection
Pressure is reduced in separator stages so the extracted nutmeg oleoresin drops out of the CO₂ and is collected.
CO₂ Recycle
Gaseous CO₂ is re-liquefied and recirculated to the extractor, limiting make-up gas demand.
Finishing & Packing
The collected nutmeg oleoresin is polished by filtration as needed and packed to the required specification.
Raw-Material Preparation
Nutmeg seeds are cleaned and size-reduced so lignans can be reached by the extraction medium; particle size and moisture are set during process development.
Slurrying
Prepared nutmeg seeds are slurried with ethanol/water or water in the extraction vessel.
Ultrasonic Cavitation
Ultrasound creates cavitation that disrupts the plant matrix and speeds release of lignans; probe intensity, temperature and filtration behaviour are piloted.
Separation
Spent solids are separated by filtration or centrifugation and the extract is clarified before concentration.
Raw-Material Preparation
Nutmeg seeds are cleaned and size-reduced so lignans can be reached by the extraction medium; particle size and moisture are set during process development.
Stage Sequence Selection
A deliberate combined extraction train is used: the sequence of stages is selected for lignans in pilot screening and each stage is designed separately.
First Assisted Stage
The first stage releases lignans from the prepared feed under controlled conditions set for that stage.
Second / Combined Stage
The second stage completes recovery of lignans from the partially extracted material; stage conditions are optimised separately.
Separation & Concentration
Spent solids are removed and the combined extract is clarified and concentrated; solvent is recovered where a solvent is used.
Standardisation & Drying
The lignans extract is assayed against the declared target specification and dried or supplied as a concentrate, according to the requirement.
Raw-Material Preparation
Nutmeg seeds are cleaned and size-reduced so lignans can be reached by the extraction medium; particle size and moisture are set during process development.
Medium Mixing
Prepared nutmeg seeds are mixed with ethanol/water or water in the microwave extraction vessel.
Microwave Heating & Extraction
Controlled microwave heating drives lignans out of the prepared feed in a short cycle; heating, moisture, solvent safety and temperature-sensitive targets are controlled, with limits set during process development and pilot validation.
Separation
Spent solids are separated by filtration or centrifugation and the extract is clarified before concentration.

Key Features
GMP/FSSAI Hygienic SS 316L Construction
Electropolished SS 316L product-contact surfaces use GMP hygienic design, with CIP operation between batches.
Dedicated De-Fatting/Winterisation Stage
A chilled winterisation and separation step removes nutmeg kernel's substantial co-extracted fixed-oil fraction, delivering a cleaner aromatic oleoresin instead of a fat-laden crude concentrate.
Myristicin-Monitored Standardisation
Batch-release GC testing quantifies myristicin alongside total volatile-oil content, supporting buyers who need to manage finished-product dosing given myristicin's documented dose-dependent effects at high intake.
Closed-Loop Solvent Recovery
Integrated recovery returns solvent to the process.
Nutmeg Butter Co-Product Recovery
The separated fixed-oil fraction is recovered as a nutmeg butter co-product rather than discarded.
Scalable Batch Capacity
Plants are configured to raw-material supply and confirmed buyer volume, with modular expansion.
