Ginger Spices Oils Distillation Plants — Mechotech

Ginger

Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey spice-oil distillation plants for ginger (Zingiber officinale). The catalogue describes ginger essential oil as steam-distilled from dried rhizomes and rich in sesquiterpene hydrocarbons — chiefly zingiberene, ar-curcumene and β-sesquiphellandrene — carrying the aromatic, warming, spicy-woody profile without the pungent gingerols and shogaols of the oleoresin, which are non-volatile.

Mechotech’s ginger oil plant is built around an SS 316L still with a perforated false bottom and mesh screen, controlled steam injection, a generously sized shell-and-tube condenser and a Florentine flask. The heavier sesquiterpene fraction needs an extended run and extra condenser area for efficient recovery. Capacity and operating parameters are established during process development and pilot validation.

Manufacturing Process

1

Raw Material Preparation

Dried ginger rhizomes are cleaned and, where required, sliced or ground to a particle size that packs evenly in the still; an integrated grinding system can be supplied as an option.

2

Charging & Distillation

The prepared ginger charge is loaded onto a perforated false bottom covered by a woven mesh screen that keeps ground fines out of the steam injection system, and distilled with steam. Ginger’s sesquiterpene-rich oil is heavier and higher-boiling than typical monoterpene spice oils, so an extended distillation run is used.

3

Condensation

Vapours pass through a multi-tube condenser with chilled-water circulation, condensing the oil and hydrosol.

4

Oil–Water Separation

Condensate is separated in a stainless-steel Florentine flask; the oil is collected and the hydrosol is drawn off and can be recovered as a co-product.

5

Polishing & Drying

The crude oil is polish-filtered and dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate or by vacuum to remove residual moisture.

6

Quality Control

Each batch is sampled for GC-MS profile — including the sesquiterpene hydrocarbons zingiberene, ar-curcumene and β-sesquiphellandrene — and for physical parameters against the client’s specification.

Major Plant Equipment

  • Raw material washing, sorting and slicing / grinding system
  • SS 316L distillation still / extractor

Plant Output

Ginger essential oilAromatic hydrosol (co-product)

Applications

  • Food and beverage flavouring — ginger ale, ginger beer, confectionery, biscuits and cooking sauces
  • Aromatherapy — massage blends, warming muscle rubs and diffusion
  • Fragrance industry — warm, spicy, oriental note in perfumery and cosmetic fragrances
  • Pharmaceutical — natural remedy for nausea, digestive support and topical preparations
  • Cosmetics — warming body oils and scalp treatments
  • Food processing — marinades, sauces and seasoning blends
  • Natural health products — functional food supplements and ginger-based wellness formulations

Key Features

  • SS 316L Construction

Product-contact surfaces are SS 316L for corrosion resistance and product purity, with CIP capability between batches.

  • Efficient Condensation

Multi-tube condensers with chilled-water circulation condense the volatile oil and hydrosol and limit loss of volatile top-notes.

  • Extended Sesquiterpene Recovery

The plant is designed for the longer distillation run and oversized condenser that ginger’s heavier sesquiterpene fraction requires; a mesh screen over the false bottom keeps ground fines out of the steam system.

  • Configurable Distillation Mode

The still is configured for steam, hydro, vacuum or pressure distillation, selected during process development for the volatility and heat-sensitivity of the target oil.

  • Hydrosol Recovery

Integrated oil–water separation allows the aromatic hydrosol to be drawn off and recovered as a co-product.

  • Scalable Capacity

Plants are configured to requirement from pilot scale upward, with modular expansion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Mechotech supply the complete machinery for Ginger?
Yes. Mechotech supplies the complete turnkey plant for Ginger — engineered, fabricated at our Hyderabad facility, installed and commissioned as a single integrated system. Final process parameters are established during process development and pilot validation.
What specification can the Ginger plant achieve?
The plant is configured to the client’s target specification for Ginger; the specification achieved is established during process development and pilot validation, and each batch is released with batch-release testing and certificate-of-analysis documentation.
What production capacities are available for the Ginger plant?
Mechotech builds Ginger plants from pilot systems for product development to commercial-scale plants. Capacity is selected from raw-material supply, confirmed buyer volume, and investment timeline; we recommend a pilot plant to validate parameters before scaling.
Which industries does the catalogue list for the Ginger plant?
The catalogue lists the Ginger plant for these industries: Pharmaceutical, Nutraceutical & Dietary Supplements, Food & Beverage, Cosmetics & Personal Care, Fragrance, Perfumery & Aromatherapy.
Which part of Ginger is processed in the distillation plant?
The catalogue lists dried ginger rhizome (Zingiber officinale), as slices or ground material. The exact feed form is confirmed with the client before the plant is configured, and an integrated grinding system can be supplied.
How is Ginger oil produced in the plant?
The prepared Ginger charge is loaded into an SS 316L still and distilled by steam, hydro, vacuum or pressure distillation, selected for the volatility and heat-sensitivity of the target oil. Vapours are condensed in a multi-tube condenser, the oil and hydrosol are separated in a Florentine flask, and the crude oil is polish-filtered and dried before GC-MS and physical-parameter testing.
How does ginger oil differ from ginger oleoresin and ginger extract?
Ginger essential oil is the volatile fraction recovered by distillation; it carries aroma, not pungency. Ginger — Oleoresin is the solvent-extracted route that also captures the non-volatile gingerols and shogaols, Ginger Extract is standardised on total gingerols by HPLC, and Ginger Oil (CO2) is the supercritical CO2 route. For ginger lily see Ginger Lily Oil (CO2).
Which related spice-oil plants does the catalogue list?
The legacy catalogue lists these related spice-oil distillation plants: Ajwain, Bay Laurel, Cardamom, Clove Buds, Coriander and Cumin. The hub is Spices Oils Distillation Plants.
