Fennel Spices Oils Distillation Plants — Mechotech

Fennel

Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey spice-oil distillation plants for fennel seed (Foeniculum vulgare). The catalogue describes fennel essential oil as dominated by trans-anethole, with fenchone and estragole as secondary constituents, giving a sweet, anise-like aroma. The oil is used in pharmaceutical digestive preparations, food and liqueur flavouring and personal care. This page covers the steam or hydro-distillation route; the solvent-extracted oleoresin route has its own page.

Mechotech’s fennel seed oil plant is configured around the seed feedstock and the target oil grade. The catalogue specifies an SS 316L jacketed still with a perforated false bottom, controlled steam injection, a shell-and-tube condenser and a Florentine flask for gravity separation. Because anethole-rich oil can crystallise in cold conditions, the condensate and collection lines are insulated. Capacity and operating parameters are established during process development and pilot validation.

Manufacturing Process

1

Raw Material Preparation

Fennel seed is cleaned of dust, stalks and foreign matter, and its moisture and variety (sweet or bitter) are confirmed; seed may be lightly cracked where the process development trial shows a benefit.

2

Loading the Still

The prepared seed is charged into the SS 316L still on a perforated false bottom that keeps the charge above the water level or steam inlet.

3

Steam or Hydro-Distillation

Steam is injected through the seed bed, or the still is run as a hydro-distillation with water added, to volatilise trans-anethole, fenchone and the other aromatic constituents; run time is set during process development.

4

Condensation

Vapours pass through a shell-and-tube condenser with chilled-water circulation, condensing the oil and hydrosol.

5

Insulated Oil–Water Separation

Condensate flows to a Florentine flask where the oil separates by density. The flask and collection lines are insulated, with optional trace heating, so anethole-rich oil does not crystallise in the line.

6

Quality Testing & Packing

Each batch is sampled for GC-MS profile, including trans-anethole, fenchone and estragole, and for physical parameters against the client’s specification before packing.

Applications

  • Digestive-health products
  • Women’s-health and infant-care preparations
  • Respiratory-care products
  • Flavouring (seed infusion, essential oil)

Key Features

  • SS 316L Construction

Product-contact surfaces are SS 316L for corrosion resistance and product purity, with CIP capability between batches.

  • Efficient Condensation

Multi-tube condensers with chilled-water circulation condense the volatile oil and hydrosol and limit loss of volatile top-notes.

  • Anti-Crystallisation Provisions

Insulated condensate lines, Florentine flask and collection vessels, with optional trace heating, protect anethole-rich oil from solidifying in cold conditions.

  • Configurable Distillation Mode

The still is configured for steam, hydro, vacuum or pressure distillation, selected during process development for the volatility and heat-sensitivity of the target oil.

  • Hydrosol Recovery

Integrated oil–water separation allows the aromatic hydrosol to be drawn off and recovered as a co-product.

  • Scalable Capacity

Plants are configured to requirement from pilot scale upward, with modular expansion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Mechotech supply the complete machinery for Fennel Seed Oil?
Yes. Mechotech supplies the complete turnkey plant for Fennel Seed Oil — engineered, fabricated at our Hyderabad facility, installed and commissioned as a single integrated system. Final process parameters are established during process development and pilot validation.
What specification can the Fennel Seed Oil plant achieve?
The plant is configured to the client’s target specification for Fennel Seed Oil; the specification achieved is established during process development and pilot validation, and each batch is released with batch-release testing and certificate-of-analysis documentation.
What production capacities are available for the Fennel Seed Oil plant?
Capacity for the Fennel plant is configured to raw-material supply, confirmed buyer volume and investment timeline, starting at pilot scale; a pilot plant is recommended to validate parameters before scaling.
Which part of fennel is processed in this plant?
The catalogue lists this plant for fennel seed (Foeniculum vulgare). The exact feed form, and whether sweet or bitter fennel is processed, is confirmed with the client before the plant is configured.
How is fennel seed oil oil produced in the plant?
Fennel seed is cleaned and loaded into an SS 316L still and distilled with steam or by hydro-distillation. Vapours are condensed, the oil and hydrosol are separated in an insulated Florentine flask, and the oil is polish-filtered, dried and tested by GC-MS against the target specification.
What is the difference between sweet fennel oil and bitter fennel oil?
The catalogue distinguishes sweet fennel oil from bitter fennel oil by variety and by fenchone content: sweet fennel (Foeniculum vulgare var. dulce) carries lower fenchone, while bitter fennel carries more, giving a sharper, more medicinal character. The two are processed to different specifications, so the variety is confirmed before the plant is configured. A dedicated page covers Sweet Fennel Essential Oil seed oil.
Why are the oil collection lines insulated?
Fennel oil is close to water in density and, because of its high anethole content, can partially crystallise at low temperature. The catalogue specifies an insulated Florentine flask and collection lines, with optional trace heating, so that crystallised oil does not block separation or transfer.
Does Mechotech also list a fennel oleoresin plant?
Yes. Fennel (oleoresin) covers solvent extraction of fennel seed into an oleoresin, whereas this page covers distillation into essential oil. For sweet fennel, see Sweet Fennel Oleoresin (oleoresin) and Sweet Fennel Essential Oil (seed oil distillation).
Which related plants does the catalogue list with fennel seed oil?
The legacy catalogue lists these related spice-oil distillation plants: Ajwain, Bay Laurel, Cardamom, Clove Buds, Coriander and Cumin.
