Turmeric — Essential Oil

Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey spices oils distillation plants for Turmeric (Curcuma longa), standardised to Essential Oil. As a turmeric oil extraction plant manufacturer, we supply the complete machinery — cleaning, comminution, steam/hydro distillation, condensation, oil-water separation and drying — to process dried turmeric rhizomes into a consistent essential oil for the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food, and fragrance industries. Buyers targeting the oleoresin and curcuminoid-colour side of turmeric rather than the essential oil should see our Curcumin / turmeric-curcumin extraction plant, a separate solvent-extraction line for purified curcuminoids.

Mechotech's Turmeric distillation plant is engineered around the volatile-oil chemistry of Curcuma longa rhizome — primarily ar-turmerone, α- and β-turmerone and zingiberene — which requires steam or hydro-distillation rather than solvent extraction to recover a true essential oil. Built in SS 316L with integrated multi-tube condensers, Florentine oil-water separation, PLC-based automation, and full documentation, each plant is delivered as a commissioned turnkey system that protects heat-sensitive aroma compounds while maximising oil yield.

Manufacturing Process

1

Raw Material Cleaning & Size Reduction

Dried turmeric rhizomes are cleaned, sorted for maturity and freedom from mould, and comminuted to the optimal particle size to maximise oil release and vapour permeability during distillation.

2

Charging & Distillation

The prepared turmeric charge is loaded into the SS 316L still and distilled by steam, hydro (hydrodistillation), vacuum, or pressure distillation — selected to protect the volatile turmerone/zingiberene fraction responsible for turmeric oil's characteristic aroma.

3

Condensation

Vapours carrying the volatile oil pass through a high-surface-area multi-tube condenser with chilled-water circulation, condensing the oil and aromatic hydrosol together.

4

Oil–Water Separation

Condensate is separated in a stainless-steel Florentine flask; the essential oil (lighter fraction) is drawn off while the turmeric hydrosol is collected separately as a co-product.

5

Polishing & Drying

The crude oil is polish-filtered and dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate (or by vacuum dehydration) to remove residual moisture and haze.

6

Quality Control

Each batch of turmeric oil is verified by GC-MS profiling (ar-turmerone, α-/β-turmerone, zingiberene) and physical parameters — specific gravity, refractive index, optical rotation — before release.

7

Storage & Packing

Finished turmeric essential oil is filled into light-protected, nitrogen-blanketed containers with full batch traceability and certificate-of-analysis documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Mechotech supply the complete machinery for Turmeric?
Yes. Mechotech is a turmeric oil extraction plant manufacturer and equipment supplier, engineering and fabricating the complete turnkey plant for Turmeric at our Hyderabad facility, installing and commissioning it as a single integrated system.
What specification can the Turmeric plant achieve?
The plant is engineered to reach the client's target specification for Turmeric essential oil, verified by GC-MS profile, specific gravity, refractive index and optical rotation, confirmed by batch-release testing with full certificate-of-analysis documentation.
Is Turmeric oil produced by distillation or solvent extraction?
Turmeric essential oil is recovered by steam or hydro distillation — this preserves the volatile turmerone and zingiberene fraction responsible for its aroma. For the curcuminoid pigment and oleoresin fraction of turmeric (used for natural colour and standardised curcumin), Mechotech separately builds solvent-based Turmeric Oleoresin extraction plants and dedicated Curcumin extraction plants standardised up to 95% curcuminoids by HPLC.
What production capacities are available for the Turmeric plant?
Mechotech builds Turmeric distillation plants from pilot systems for product development to commercial-scale plants. Capacity is selected from raw-material supply, confirmed buyer volume, and investment timeline; we recommend a pilot plant to validate parameters before scaling.
Can the hydrosol be recovered and sold as a co-product?
Yes. The Florentine separation stage recovers turmeric hydrosol alongside the oil, which can be recovered as an aromatic water co-product.
What raw material and plant part does the Turmeric distillation plant process?
The plant processes dried, cleaned turmeric rhizomes (Curcuma longa). The rhizomes are cleaned, sorted for maturity and freedom from mould, and comminuted to the optimal particle size before distillation.
How does the Turmeric essential oil distillation process work?
The process runs in seven steps: raw-material cleaning and size reduction; charging and distillation by steam, hydro, vacuum or pressure distillation; condensation in a multi-tube condenser with chilled-water circulation; oil–water separation in a stainless-steel Florentine flask; polishing and drying over anhydrous sodium sulphate or by vacuum dehydration; quality control by GC-MS profiling and physical parameters; and storage and packing in light-protected, nitrogen-blanketed containers.
What equipment does the Turmeric distillation plant include?
The listed equipment is: raw material cleaning & sorting system; comminution / size-reduction mill; SS 316L distillation still (steam / hydro / vacuum configurable); steam boiler / steam generator; multi-tube condenser with chilled-water circulation; stainless-steel Florentine oil-water separator; polish filtration system; oil drying unit (sodium sulphate bed or vacuum dehydration); hydrosol collection & storage tanks; nitrogen-blanketed oil storage & filling system; CIP (clean-in-place) system; and a PLC-based automation panel with electrical MCC and instrumentation.
What does the Turmeric plant produce?
It produces turmeric essential oil (steam-distilled) as a liquid, with turmeric hydrosol (aromatic water) as a co-product that is collected separately at the Florentine separation stage.
What utilities, automation and compliance does the Turmeric plant list?
The listed utilities are a steam boiler, chilled water, compressed air and power (project-specific). Automation is PLC-based and configurable from manual to fully automatic. Compliance is listed as GMP, HACCP and FSSAI hygienic design, with full documentation for qualification.
Which related Mechotech pages cover turmeric?
Curcuminoids from turmeric rhizome are covered on the Curcumin page, turmeric oil by supercritical CO₂ on the Turmeric Oil (CO₂) page, and residual turmerones from turmeric spent marc on the Turmeric Spent Marc Turmerone (CO₂) page.
Which industries use the Turmeric plant?
Pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food and flavour, cosmetic, and fragrance manufacturers use Mechotech plants for consistent, compliant production. Mechotech also manufactures a full range of spices oils distillation plants for other aromatic spices.
