Turmeric Oil (CO2) CO2 Extraction Plants — Mechotech

Turmeric Oil (CO2)

Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey CO2 extraction plants for turmeric oil (Curcuma longa). Supercritical CO2 extraction recovers the oil without an organic solvent as the extraction medium, with the rhizome as the usual turmeric oil feed on Mechotech’s distillation pages (the Sureka Life Sciences entry states no plant part); the Sureka Life Sciences (SLS) catalogue lists the product as Turmeric Oil (CO2 Extracted), offered with ar-turmerone as the grade (CAS 532-65-0) and no percentage, for nutraceutical, flavouring, fine perfumery and cosmetic applications. Steam distillation, leaf-oil distillation and curcuminoid extraction are listed on separate pages.

Mechotech’s Turmeric Oil (CO2) plant is configured as a high-pressure supercritical CO2 extraction line in SS 316L with integrated CO2 recovery and recirculation, PLC-based automation and full documentation, delivered as a commissioned turnkey system. The pressure, temperature, CO2 flow and the target ar-turmerone fraction are established with the client during process development and pilot validation.

Manufacturing Process

1

Raw Material Preparation

Turmeric rhizome is cleaned, sorted and conditioned so the oil is accessible to supercritical CO2; moisture and particle size are set during process development.

2

Supercritical CO2 Extraction

Prepared rhizome is charged into the high-pressure SS 316L extraction vessel, where CO2 is pressurised and heated past its critical point to act as the extraction medium, drawing out the oil.

3

Separation

The CO2–extract mixture is passed to a separator vessel where pressure is reduced, so the CO2 reverts to gas and releases the extract.

4

CO2 Recovery & Recirculation

Released CO2 gas is recompressed, condensed and recirculated back into the extraction cycle, limiting make-up CO2.

5

Collection & Quality Control

The extract is collected and each batch is tested against the agreed specification, with test methods defined during process development, before release.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Mechotech supply the complete machinery for Turmeric Oil (CO2)?
Yes. Mechotech supplies the complete turnkey plant for Turmeric Oil (CO2) — engineered, fabricated at our Hyderabad facility, installed and commissioned as a single integrated system. Final process parameters are established during process development and pilot validation.
What specification can the Turmeric Oil (CO2) plant achieve?
The plant is configured to the client’s target specification for Turmeric Oil (CO2); the specification achieved is established during process development and pilot validation, and batch-release testing with certificate-of-analysis documentation is defined with the client.
What production capacities are available for the Turmeric Oil (CO2) plant?
Capacity for the Turmeric Oil (CO2) plant is configured to raw-material supply, confirmed buyer volume and investment timeline, starting at pilot scale; a pilot plant is recommended to validate parameters before scaling.
Which part of turmeric is processed in the CO2 plant?
The Sureka Life Sciences entry names Curcuma longa and states no plant part. The rhizome is the usual feed for turmeric oil on Mechotech’s distillation pages, so the plant is configured for it, and the plant part, the form (fresh or dried) and the conditioning are confirmed with the client before the plant is configured.
What marker does the catalogue list for turmeric oil by CO2?
The Sureka Life Sciences entry for Turmeric Oil (CO2 Extracted) lists ar-turmerone as the offering grade, CAS 532-65-0, without a percentage, and the product tree has no entry for it. The target fraction, the assay method and the acceptance limits are agreed with the buyer and established during process development.
How is turmeric oil produced by supercritical CO2 extraction?
Conditioned rhizome is charged into a high-pressure SS 316L extraction vessel where CO2, pressurised and heated past its critical point, dissolves the oil. Pressure is reduced in a separator so the CO2 reverts to gas and releases the extract, and the CO2 is recompressed and recirculated. Pressure, temperature and flow are set during process development.
How does this page differ from the turmeric distillation and curcumin pages?
Turmeric is the steam-distillation route to ar-turmerone-rich essential oil, Turmeric is the leaf-oil distillation and Curcumin is the curcuminoid extraction from the rhizome. This page is the supercritical CO2 route to the oil. The Sureka Life Sciences catalogue lists the CO2 oil with CAS 532-65-0 and its steam-distilled oil under a different CAS, so the products are not interchangeable and the specification is agreed per project.
Does Mechotech list a related CO2 route for turmeric residue?
Yes. Turmeric Spent Marc Turmerone (CO₂) is a separate entry for recovering residual turmerones from spent marc, a different feed from the rhizome. For the general CO2 platform see SCFE – Supercritical CO2 Extraction Plant and CO2 Extraction Plants.
When is CO2 extraction preferred over distillation for turmeric?
CO2 extraction suits buyers who want CO2 rather than an organic solvent as the extraction medium, and a CO2 extract rather than a steam-distilled oil; the catalogue notes that the CO2 oil is a distinct offering from its steam-distilled turmeric oil. The route is chosen after screening against the target specification.
