Extraction Technologies

Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE)

Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey extraction plants that process black cumin seeds to recover thymoquinone-rich oil. We supply the machinery for the route selected after screening — raw-material preparation, extraction, separation, concentration or recovery, and drying or collection — configured to the target specification. Candidate extraction technologies for thymoquinone-rich oil: Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE).

For black cumin seeds with thymoquinone-rich oil as the target, there is one candidate technology: Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE). Supercritical CO₂ is generally suited to non-polar fractions such as oils, with an ethanol modifier evaluated only where polar fractions are also needed. These are screening candidates rather than guarantees: the final technology, operating parameters and plant configuration are established during process development and pilot validation. Product-contact parts are built in SS 316L with CIP-cleanable design, and automation is configured to the project.

Manufacturing Process

Each extraction method follows a different process — pick a method to see its steps.

1

Raw-Material Conditioning

Black cumin seeds are cleaned and conditioned so thymoquinone-rich oil is accessible to supercritical CO₂; moisture and particle size are set during process development.

2

Extraction Vessel Loading

Conditioned black cumin seeds are charged into the high-pressure extraction vessel.

3

Supercritical CO₂ Extraction

Supercritical CO₂ passes through the charge and dissolves thymoquinone-rich oil; an ethanol modifier can be evaluated where polar fractions are also required, and operating pressure and temperature are set in process development.

4

Separator Collection

Pressure is reduced in separator stages so the extracted thymoquinone-rich oil drops out of the CO₂ and is collected.

5

CO₂ Recycle

Gaseous CO₂ is re-liquefied and recirculated to the extractor, limiting make-up gas demand.

6

Finishing & Packing

The collected thymoquinone-rich oil is polished by filtration as needed and packed to the required specification.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a black cumin seed extraction plant for thymoquinone-rich oil?
It is a turnkey Mechotech plant that processes black cumin seeds to recover thymoquinone-rich oil. The plant covers raw-material preparation, extraction, separation, concentration or fraction collection, and drying or packing, and is configured to the target specification. It sits within Mechotech's wider range of CO₂ extraction plants.
Which plant part or feed form does the black cumin seed plant process?
The candidate feedstock is black cumin seeds. The target extract is thymoquinone-rich oil.
Does Mechotech supply the complete machinery for Black Cumin (Kalonji) Seed Oil (CO₂)?
Yes. Mechotech is a CO2 extraction plant manufacturer and equipment supplier, engineering and fabricating the complete turnkey plant for Black Cumin (Kalonji) Seed Oil (CO₂) at our Hyderabad facility, installing and commissioning it as a single integrated system.
Which industries use the Black Cumin (Kalonji) Seed Oil (CO₂) plant?
Pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food, and cosmetic manufacturers use Mechotech plants for consistent, compliant, solvent-free production.
Which extraction technology is suitable for black cumin seeds?
The candidate technology for this feedstock is Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE). See the related pages on supercritical CO₂ extraction. These are screening candidates, not guarantees of yield, purity or recovery; the route is confirmed through process development and pilot validation. In Mechotech's technology screening, Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (rank 63 of 100) is ranked directionally as a relevant candidate. Ranks are directional screening priorities at method-family level, not measured yield, ROI or plant guarantees.
How does the black cumin seed extraction process work?
Each route follows the same outline: prepare black cumin seeds, extract thymoquinone-rich oil using the technology-specific step, separate and collect the extracted fraction, and finish and pack. The process tabs above show the steps for each listed technology.
What equipment does the black cumin seed extraction plant include?
The equipment follows the selected route and includes raw-material cleaning and size-reduction system; supercritical CO₂ extraction vessels; CO₂ pump, heat exchangers and chiller; separator vessels; CO₂ recovery / recycle system; optional ethanol-modifier dosing skid; product collection vessels and polish filtration; CIP (clean-in-place) system. The full list is shown under Major Plant Equipment.
Why is supercritical CO₂ a candidate technology for thymoquinone-rich oil?
Supercritical CO₂ is generally suited to non-polar fractions such as oils and waxes, which is why it is a candidate technology for thymoquinone-rich oil. Where polar fractions are also needed, an ethanol modifier can be evaluated and validated separately.
What output and specification can the black cumin seed plant deliver?
The plant is configured to a customer-declared specification for thymoquinone-rich oil. No fixed purity, grade or yield is claimed until pilot results are available.
Which related Mechotech extraction pages cover the same material or target?
The standardised thymoquinone extract is covered on the Black Cumin Extract page. Other CO₂ oil pages include Cumin Oil (CO₂) and Black Pepper Oil (CO₂).
What capacity is available and is a pilot trial recommended?
Capacity is configured to requirement. Mechotech's technology screening recommends starting with small-scale feed trials to measure recovery, selectivity, solvent or water duty, quality and cleaning before pilot and commercial plant sizes are fixed.
