Haematococcus Microalgae Astaxanthin (CO₂)

Haematococcus Microalgae Astaxanthin (CO₂)
Extraction Technologies
Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey extraction plants that process Haematococcus microalgae to recover astaxanthin. We supply the machinery for the route selected after screening — raw-material preparation, extraction, separation, concentration or recovery, and drying or collection — configured to the target specification. Mechotech's technology screening identifies one candidate route for this feedstock: Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE) (relevant screening, rank 64 of 100 in that technology's screening). The exact plant part / feed form is to be confirmed with the client.
For Haematococcus microalgae with astaxanthin as the target, there is one candidate technology: Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE). By route — Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE): relevant screening, rank 64 of 100, CO₂; optional ethanol modifier. For the best-ranked route, Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE), the screening flags: nonpolar fraction preferred; polar targets may need modifier and separate validation. These are screening candidates rather than guarantees: the final technology, operating parameters and plant configuration are established during process development and pilot validation. Product-contact parts are built in SS 316L with CIP-cleanable design, and automation is configured to the project.

Manufacturing Process
Each extraction method follows a different process — pick a method to see its steps.
Raw-Material Conditioning
Haematococcus microalgae is cleaned and conditioned so astaxanthin is accessible to supercritical CO₂; moisture and particle size are set during process development.
Extraction Vessel Loading
Conditioned Haematococcus microalgae is charged into the high-pressure extraction vessel.
Supercritical CO₂ Extraction
Supercritical CO₂ passes through the charge and dissolves astaxanthin; an ethanol modifier can be evaluated where polar fractions are also required, and operating pressure and temperature are set in process development.
Separator Collection
Pressure is reduced in separator stages so the extracted astaxanthin drops out of the CO₂ and is collected.
CO₂ Recycle
Gaseous CO₂ is re-liquefied and recirculated to the extractor, limiting make-up gas demand.
Finishing & Packing
The collected astaxanthin is polished by filtration as needed and packed to the required specification.

Key Features
Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE) — Relevant Screening Fit
Best-ranked route for Haematococcus microalgae: rank 64 of 100 in Mechotech's supercritical CO₂ extraction screening, using CO₂; optional ethanol modifier. Ranks are directional screening priorities, not measured yield, ROI or plant guarantees.
Microalgae Haematococcus — Single Candidate Route
Routes screened for Haematococcus microalgae: Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE) — relevant, rank 64. The process tab above shows the steps for this route.
Feed Form To Be Confirmed
The exact plant part / feed form for Haematococcus microalgae is to be confirmed with the client; feedstock assay and moisture are measured as pilot inputs before the route is finalised.
Parameters Fixed After Pilot Trials
Recovery of astaxanthin, selectivity, solvent or water duty, quality and cleaning are measured in pilot trials, starting with small-scale feed trials, before final plant parameters are fixed.
SS 316L Hygienic Construction
Product-contact surfaces are SS 316L and CIP-cleanable, in a hygienic design suited to food, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical supply chains; PLC-SCADA automation with recipe control can be configured to the project scope.
