Extraction Technologies

Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE)

Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey extraction plants that process Schizochytrium algae to recover DHA-rich oil. We supply the machinery for the route selected after screening — raw-material preparation, extraction, separation, concentration or recovery, and drying or collection — configured to the target specification. Mechotech's technology screening identifies one candidate route for this feedstock: Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE) (exploratory screening, rank 80 of 100 in that technology's screening). The exact plant part / feed form is to be confirmed with the client.

For Schizochytrium algae with DHA-rich oil as the target, there is one candidate technology: Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE). By route — Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE): exploratory screening, rank 80 of 100, CO₂; optional ethanol modifier. For the best-ranked route, Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE), the screening flags: nonpolar fraction preferred; polar targets may need modifier and separate validation. These are screening candidates rather than guarantees: the final technology, operating parameters and plant configuration are established during process development and pilot validation. Product-contact parts are built in SS 316L with CIP-cleanable design, and automation is configured to the project.

Manufacturing Process

Each extraction method follows a different process — pick a method to see its steps.

1

Feed Reception & Inspection

Schizochytrium algae is received and inspected, and feedstock assay and moisture are measured; the feed form, to be confirmed with the client, is set during process development for supercritical CO₂ extraction of DHA-rich oil.

2

Extraction Vessel Loading

Conditioned Schizochytrium algae is charged into the high-pressure extraction vessel.

3

Supercritical CO₂ Extraction

Supercritical CO₂ passes through the charge and dissolves DHA-rich oil; an ethanol modifier can be evaluated where polar fractions are also required, and operating pressure and temperature are set in process development.

4

Separator Collection

Pressure is reduced in separator stages so the extracted DHA-rich oil drops out of the CO₂ and is collected.

5

CO₂ Recycle

Gaseous CO₂ is re-liquefied and recirculated to the extractor, limiting make-up gas demand.

6

Finishing & Packing

The collected DHA-rich oil is polished by filtration as needed and packed to the required specification.

Key Features

  • Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE) — Exploratory Screening Fit

Best-ranked route for Schizochytrium algae: rank 80 of 100 in Mechotech's supercritical CO₂ extraction screening, using CO₂; optional ethanol modifier. Ranks are directional screening priorities, not measured yield, ROI or plant guarantees.

  • Algae Schizochytrium — Single Candidate Route

Routes screened for Schizochytrium algae: Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE) — exploratory, rank 80. The process tab above shows the steps for this route.

  • Feed Form To Be Confirmed

The exact plant part / feed form for Schizochytrium algae is to be confirmed with the client; feedstock assay and moisture are measured as pilot inputs before the route is finalised.

  • Parameters Fixed After Pilot Trials

Recovery of DHA-rich oil, selectivity, solvent or water duty, quality and cleaning are measured in pilot trials, starting with small-scale feed trials, before final plant parameters are fixed.

  • SS 316L Hygienic Construction

Product-contact surfaces are SS 316L and CIP-cleanable, in a hygienic design suited to food, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical supply chains; PLC-SCADA automation with recipe control can be configured to the project scope.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Schizochytrium algae extraction plant for DHA-rich oil?
It is a turnkey Mechotech plant that processes Schizochytrium algae to recover DHA-rich oil. The plant covers raw-material preparation, extraction, separation, concentration or fraction collection, and drying or packing, and is configured to the target specification. It sits within Mechotech's wider range of co2 extraction plants.
What feedstock does the Schizochytrium algae plant process?
The listed feedstock is Schizochytrium algae. The exact plant part / feed form is to be confirmed with the client. The target extract is DHA-rich oil.
Which extraction technology is suitable for Schizochytrium algae?
The candidate technology for this feedstock is Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE) (exploratory screening). See the related pages on supercritical CO₂ extraction. These are screening candidates, not guarantees of yield, purity or recovery; the route is confirmed through process development and pilot validation. In Mechotech's technology screening, Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (rank 80 of 100) is ranked directionally as an exploratory candidate. Ranks are directional screening priorities at method-family level, not measured yield, ROI or plant guarantees.
How does Mechotech's screening rank the candidate route for Schizochytrium algae?
Each technology list in Mechotech's screening ranks 100 feedstock–target opportunities (1 = highest priority). For Schizochytrium algae: Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE) rank 80 (exploratory). Ranks are directional screening priorities, not measured yield, ROI or plant guarantees, and the evidence is at method-family level, so every route needs pilot validation.
What equipment does the Schizochytrium Algae DHA-Rich Oil extraction plant include?
The equipment follows the selected route and includes raw material feeding system; supercritical CO₂ extraction vessels; CO₂ pump, heat exchangers and chiller; separator vessels; CO₂ recovery / recycle system; optional ethanol-modifier dosing skid; product collection vessels and polish filtration; CIP (clean-in-place) system. The full list is shown under Major Plant Equipment.
How does the Schizochytrium algae extraction process work?
Each listed route has its own steps — Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE): Extraction Vessel Loading → Supercritical CO₂ Extraction → Separator Collection. All routes share the same outline: prepare Schizochytrium algae, extract DHA-rich oil using the technology-specific step, separate and clarify the extract, concentrate it, and recover, standardise and dry. The process tabs above show every step.
Why is supercritical CO₂ a candidate technology for DHA-rich oil?
Supercritical CO₂ is generally suited to non-polar fractions such as oils and waxes, which is why it is a candidate technology for DHA-rich oil. Where polar fractions are also needed, an ethanol modifier can be evaluated and validated separately.
What output and specification can the Schizochytrium algae plant deliver?
The listed output is DHA-rich oil. The plant is configured to a customer-declared specification for DHA-rich oil. No fixed purity, grade or yield is claimed until pilot results are available.
What application areas are listed for Schizochytrium Algae DHA-Rich Oil (CO₂)?
The application areas listed on this page are: pharmaceutical standardised ingredient supply; nutraceutical capsule, tablet, and supplement manufacturing; food and beverage applications; export to regulated-market ingredient buyers.
Which related Mechotech extraction pages cover the same material or target?
EPA-rich oil from Nannochloropsis algae is covered on the Nannochloropsis Algae Oil (CO₂) page.
What capacity is available and is a pilot trial recommended?
Capacity is configured to requirement. Mechotech's technology screening recommends starting with small-scale feed trials to measure recovery, selectivity, solvent or water duty, quality and cleaning before pilot and commercial plant sizes are fixed.
