Black Cumin Extract

Purity Levels

0.5% to 2.0% Thymoquinones by UV

Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey extraction plants for Black Cumin (Nigella sativa), also known as black seed or kalonji, processing the dried seed into a standardised extract at 0.5% to 2.0% Thymoquinones by UV. Thymoquinone is the principal bioactive quinone concentrated in the seed's volatile-oil fraction, and it is well documented as the marker compound for black-seed extract strength. We supply the complete machinery — seed cleaning, milling, solvent or CO2-based extraction, filtration, vacuum concentration, closed-loop solvent recovery, UV standardisation and drying — to process Nigella sativa seed into a consistent extract for the nutraceutical, pharmaceutical and functional-food industries.

Mechotech's Black Cumin Extract plant is engineered around the chemistry of Nigella sativa seed, in which thymoquinone — a volatile, oxidation-sensitive benzoquinone — sits within the seed's essential-oil fraction alongside p-cymene and other terpenes. Because thymoquinone degrades on prolonged heat exposure and readily oxidises in air, the line runs controlled-temperature extraction, low-temperature vacuum concentration and protected drying to preserve the quinone fraction through to the finished 0.5%-2.0% Thymoquinones by UV specification. Black Cumin (Nigella sativa) is a member of the Ranunculaceae family and is botanically unrelated to true cumin (Cuminum cyminum, Apiaceae family) — the two are frequently confused by name alone, but Mechotech engineers this as a dedicated Nigella sativa line, distinct from its separate Cumin oleoresin plant. Built in SS 316L with electropolished product-contact surfaces, PLC-SCADA automation and full batch documentation, each plant is delivered as a commissioned turnkey system.

Manufacturing Process

1

Seed Cleaning & Size Reduction

Dried Nigella sativa seed is cleaned to remove husk, dust and foreign matter, tested for moisture, and milled to a uniform particle size to expose the seed's oil-bearing tissue for efficient solvent contact.

2

Solvent or Supercritical CO2 Extraction

Milled seed is charged into closed, jacketed SS 316L extractors (or a pressure-rated vessel for CO2 operation) and extracted under controlled, moderated temperature across multiple cycles to maximise recovery of the thymoquinone-rich volatile-oil fraction.

3

Solid-Liquid Separation & Filtration

The extract is clarified through a plate-and-frame filter press followed by cartridge polish filters, removing spent seed marc ahead of concentration.

4

Low-Temperature Vacuum Concentration

The filtered extract is concentrated in a falling-film / vacuum evaporator under reduced pressure and closely controlled temperature, protecting the volatile, oxidation-sensitive thymoquinone fraction from thermal loss.

5

Solvent Recovery

A closed-loop recovery system condenses and recycles the extraction solvent back into production.

6

UV Standardisation

The concentrate is assayed by UV spectrophotometry for thymoquinone content and adjusted to the declared 0.5% to 2.0% Thymoquinones by UV specification, typically by blending lots of differing potency.

7

Protected Drying & Quality Control

The standardised extract is vacuum-tray or spray dried under oxidation-protected handling to a free-flowing powder, then released after UV assay, residual-solvent, heavy-metal, microbial, and moisture testing with full certificate-of-analysis documentation.

From Plant to Product

Black Cumin Extract

This botanical is also in the product range of Sureka Life Sciences, our sister concern in botanical ingredients.

Applications

  • Nutraceutical capsule, tablet, and softgel supplement manufacturing (immune-support category)
  • Pharmaceutical standardised ingredient supply
  • Functional food and beverage fortification
  • Cosmetic and personal-care antioxidant actives
  • Traditional and Unani medicine preparations (black seed formulations)
  • Export to regulated-market ingredient buyers requiring UV-verified thymoquinone content

Key Features

  • GMP Hygienic SS 316L Construction

Electropolished SS 316L product-contact surfaces use GMP hygienic design, with CIP operation between batches.

  • Oxidation-Protected Processing

Extraction, concentration and drying stages are run at moderated temperature throughout, since thymoquinone is a volatile, oxidation-sensitive compound within the seed's essential-oil fraction.

  • Closed-Loop Solvent Recovery

Integrated recovery returns the majority of solvent per batch for reuse.

  • UV-Verified Standardisation

In-process and batch-release UV spectrophotometry assay are used to check the finished extract against its declared 0.5%-2.0% Thymoquinones specification.

  • Botanically Distinct from True Cumin

The plant is engineered specifically for Nigella sativa (black seed) chemistry — a different genus and family from Cuminum cyminum (true cumin) — with process parameters tuned to thymoquinone rather than cuminaldehyde recovery.

  • Scalable Batch Capacity

Plants are configured from pilot scale to commercial capacity with modular expansion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Mechotech supply the complete machinery for Black Cumin extraction?
Yes. Mechotech supplies the complete turnkey plant for Black Cumin (Nigella sativa) — engineered, fabricated at our Hyderabad facility, installed and commissioned as a single integrated system.
Is Black Cumin the same as true Cumin?
No — this is a common point of confusion. Black Cumin is Nigella sativa (family Ranunculaceae), standardised here to Thymoquinones by UV, while true Cumin is Cuminum cyminum (family Apiaceae), a completely different plant standardised to cuminaldehyde. Mechotech builds a separate Cumin oleoresin extraction plant for true cumin seed — buyers should confirm which botanical and marker compound they need before specifying a plant.
Should Black Cumin be processed by solvent extraction or supercritical CO2?
Both routes are engineered into the line, and the choice depends on target market and product form. Solvent extraction (ethanol/hexane-class) is the lower-capital, higher-throughput route for a standardised dry extract powder, with residual solvent controlled to specification and removed in closed-loop recovery. Supercritical CO2 leaves no solvent residue at all, which suits buyers targeting a seed-oil concentrate for premium nutraceutical or cosmetic markets where a solvent-free claim matters, at higher equipment cost. Both routes reach the same 0.5% to 2.0% Thymoquinones by UV specification.
Why is Black Cumin extraction run at controlled, moderated temperature?
Thymoquinone is a volatile benzoquinone concentrated in the seed's essential-oil fraction and is prone to thermal loss and oxidation. Mechotech's line uses controlled-temperature extraction and low-temperature vacuum concentration to protect thymoquinone content through to the finished, UV-standardised extract.
What raw material and plant part is used for Black Cumin extract?
Dried Nigella sativa seed (commonly called black seed or kalonji) is used — the whole seed is milled ahead of extraction, since thymoquinone is concentrated within the seed's internal oil-bearing tissue.
What production capacities are available for the Black Cumin Extract plant?
Mechotech builds Black Cumin plants from pilot scale for product development up to commercial scale. Capacity is selected from raw-material supply, confirmed buyer volume, and investment timeline; we recommend a pilot plant to validate thymoquinone recovery before scaling.
Which industries use Black Cumin extract, and does the plant support GMP qualification?
Nutraceutical and immune-support supplement brands, pharmaceutical ingredient buyers, and traditional/Unani medicine formulators use Mechotech plants for consistent, compliant production. Every plant is built in electropolished SS 316L with CIP cleaning to GMP hygienic design, with full documentation for qualification.
