Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey extraction plants for Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), processing the fruit pulp and skin — where lycopene is naturally concentrated — into a standardised extract at 10% Lycopene. Lycopene is a fat-soluble carotenoid pigment responsible for tomato's red colour, and it is notably heat- and light-sensitive and prone to oxidative and isomeric degradation, which shapes every stage of the process. We supply the complete machinery — pulp/skin preparation, low-temperature solvent or CO2-based extraction, filtration, gentle concentration, closed-loop solvent recovery, standardisation and protected drying — to produce a consistent lycopene extract for the nutraceutical, functional-food, cosmetic and natural food-colour industries. Candidate extraction technologies for lycopene, lycopene oil and pectin: Counter-Current Extraction (CCE), Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE), Subcritical Water Extraction (SWE), Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE), Enzyme-Assisted Extraction (EAE), Hybrid Extraction and Microwave-Assisted Extraction (MAE) (7 in total).

Mechotech's Tomato plant is engineered around the specific chemistry of lycopene: an unsaturated, all-trans carotenoid concentrated mainly in the fruit skin and outer pulp (processing tomato pomace and skin fractions are typically far richer in lycopene than the pulp alone), which readily isomerises and oxidises when exposed to heat, light and oxygen. Rather than the aggressive high-temperature extraction suited to more stable actives, the line runs controlled low-temperature solvent extraction (or supercritical CO2 as an oxygen-free alternative), inert-gas blanketing during concentration, and light-protected handling through to drying, so the finished powder holds its 10% Lycopene specification. Built in SS 316L with electropolished product-contact surfaces, PLC-SCADA automation and full batch documentation, each plant is delivered as a commissioned turnkey system.

Manufacturing Process

Each extraction method follows a different process — pick a method to see its steps.

1

Raw-Material Preparation

Tomato pomace is cleaned and size-reduced so lycopene can be reached by the extraction medium; particle size and moisture are set during process development.

2

Counter-Current Loading

Prepared tomato pomace is fed into a multi-stage solid–liquid counter-current extractor where fresh ethanol/water or a suitable food-grade solvent meets the most-depleted material.

3

Counter-Current Extraction

Solvent flows against the solids across stages to draw out lycopene; bed flow and fines management are verified during pilot work.

4

Extract (Miscella) Collection

The lycopene-bearing miscella is collected from the fresh-feed end while spent solids are discharged from the solvent-entry end.

5

Concentration & Solvent Recovery

Solvent is removed from the clarified lycopene-bearing extract under vacuum and returned through a solvent-recovery loop; recovery performance is confirmed at pilot scale.

6

Standardisation & Drying

The lycopene extract is assayed against the declared target specification and dried or supplied as a concentrate, according to the requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Mechotech supply the complete machinery for Tomato lycopene extraction?
Yes. Mechotech supplies the complete turnkey plant for Tomato — engineered, fabricated at our Hyderabad facility, installed, and commissioned as a single integrated system producing 10% Lycopene output.
Why is Tomato extraction processed at low temperature?
Lycopene is a fat-soluble carotenoid with a highly conjugated double-bond structure that readily isomerises from its stable all-trans form and oxidises when exposed to heat, light or oxygen. Mechotech's line runs low-temperature solvent or supercritical CO2 extraction with nitrogen-blanketed concentration and light-protected drying specifically to protect lycopene content through processing.
Which part of the tomato is used for lycopene extraction?
Lycopene is concentrated mainly in the tomato's outer skin and pulp rather than being distributed evenly through the fruit, which is why tomato-processing skin and pomace fractions are commonly used as a lycopene-rich raw material alongside dedicated fruit.
Does it matter if the raw material is fresh pomace or dried skin?
Yes. Fresh tomato-processing pomace arrives wet, at high moisture, and is typically extracted promptly or briefly cold-stored to limit lycopene loss before it degrades, whereas dried skin fractions are more storage-stable but require rehydration or adjusted solvent ratios to compensate for the lower moisture going into extraction. Mechotech configures the raw-material handling and extractor charge parameters to whichever feedstock — fresh wet pomace or dried skin — the buyer's supply chain provides, since this changes solvent-to-solids ratio and extraction cycle time even though the target 10% Lycopene specification stays the same.
Is solvent recovered during the Tomato extraction process?
Yes. A closed-loop recovery system condenses and recycles the extraction solvent back into production, returning solvent to the process for reuse.
What production capacities are available for the Tomato plant?
Capacity is selected from raw-material supply, confirmed buyer volume and investment timeline; Mechotech recommends a pilot plant to validate process parameters before scaling.
What is a tomato pomace extraction plant for lycopene, lycopene oil and pectin?
It is a turnkey Mechotech plant that processes tomato pomace to recover lycopene, lycopene oil and pectin. The plant covers raw-material preparation, extraction, separation, concentration or fraction collection, and drying or packing, and is configured to the target specification. It sits within Mechotech's wider range of herbal extraction plants.
Which plant part or feed form does the tomato pomace plant process?
The candidate feedstock is tomato pomace. The target extract is lycopene, lycopene oil and pectin.
Which extraction technologies are suitable for tomato pomace?
This feedstock has 7 candidate technologies: Counter-Current Extraction (CCE), Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE), Subcritical Water Extraction (SWE), Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE), Enzyme-Assisted Extraction (EAE), Hybrid Extraction and Microwave-Assisted Extraction (MAE). See the related pages on counter-current extraction, supercritical CO₂ extraction, subcritical water extraction, ultrasound-assisted extraction, enzyme-assisted extraction, hybrid extraction and microwave-assisted extraction. These are screening candidates, not guarantees of yield, purity or recovery; the route is confirmed through process development and pilot validation. In Mechotech's technology screening these candidates are ranked directionally — high-priority: Counter-Current Extraction for lycopene (rank 6 of 100), Supercritical CO₂ Extraction for lycopene oil (rank 2 of 100), Subcritical Water Extraction for pectin (rank 2 of 100), Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction for lycopene (rank 6 of 100), Enzyme-Assisted Extraction for pectin (rank 2 of 100), Hybrid Extraction for lycopene (rank 6 of 100), Microwave-Assisted Extraction for lycopene (rank 6 of 100); relevant: Hybrid Extraction for pectin (rank 38 of 100). Ranks are directional screening priorities at method-family level, not measured yield, ROI or plant guarantees.
Why do the candidate technologies target lycopene, lycopene oil and pectin when the specification on this page is 10% lycopene?
In Mechotech's technology screening the candidate routes are assessed against different targets: the counter-current, ultrasound, hybrid and microwave routes with lycopene as the target and the supercritical CO₂ route with lycopene oil as the target and the subcritical water, enzyme-assisted and hybrid routes with pectin as the target. The 10% lycopene specification on this page is the catalogue specification for this product; which target and grade apply is confirmed during process development and pilot validation.
How does the tomato pomace extraction process work?
Each route follows the same outline: prepare tomato pomace, extract lycopene, lycopene oil and pectin using the technology-specific step, separate and clarify the extract, concentrate it, and recover, standardise and dry. The process tabs above show the steps for each listed technology.
What equipment does the tomato pomace extraction plant include?
The equipment follows the selected route and includes raw material reception and washing system; pulp/skin screening and seed-removal system; stainless-steel jacketed extraction vessels (SS 316L) or supercritical CO2 extraction unit; solvent storage tanks; solvent transfer pumps; plate-and-frame filter press / pressure leaf filter; cartridge polish filters; nitrogen blanketing system. The full list is shown under Major Plant Equipment.
