Extraction Technologies

Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE)Subcritical Water Extraction (SWE)Enzyme-Assisted Extraction (EAE)

Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey extraction plants that process tiger nut tubers to recover tiger nut oil, and starch and fiber. We supply the machinery for the route selected after screening — raw-material preparation, extraction, separation, concentration or recovery, and drying or collection — configured to the target specification. Mechotech's technology screening assigns routes by target — tiger nut oil: Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE); starch and fiber: Subcritical Water (SWE) and Enzyme-Assisted (EAE); the best-ranked route overall is Enzyme-Assisted Extraction (EAE) (relevant screening, rank 57 of 100).

For tiger nut tubers with tiger nut oil, and starch and fiber as the target, there are 3 candidate technologies: Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE), Subcritical Water Extraction (SWE) and Enzyme-Assisted Extraction (EAE). By route — Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE) for tiger nut oil: relevant screening, rank 61 of 100, CO₂; optional ethanol modifier; Subcritical Water (SWE) for starch and fiber: exploratory screening, rank 73 of 100, pressurized water; Enzyme-Assisted (EAE) for starch and fiber: relevant screening, rank 57 of 100, water, enzyme and pH control. For the best-ranked route, Enzyme-Assisted (EAE), the screening flags: select cellulase/pectinase/protease by matrix; control enzyme cost and inactivation. These are screening candidates rather than guarantees: the final technology, operating parameters and plant configuration are established during process development and pilot validation. Product-contact parts are built in SS 316L with CIP-cleanable design, and automation is configured to the project.

Manufacturing Process

Each extraction method follows a different process — pick a method to see its steps.

1

Raw-Material Conditioning

Tiger nut tubers are cleaned and conditioned so tiger nut oil is accessible to supercritical CO₂; moisture and particle size are set during process development.

2

Extraction Vessel Loading

Conditioned tiger nut tubers are charged into the high-pressure extraction vessel.

3

Supercritical CO₂ Extraction

Supercritical CO₂ passes through the charge and dissolves tiger nut oil; an ethanol modifier can be evaluated where polar fractions are also required, and operating pressure and temperature are set in process development.

4

Separator Collection

Pressure is reduced in separator stages so the extracted tiger nut oil drops out of the CO₂ and is collected.

5

CO₂ Recycle

Gaseous CO₂ is re-liquefied and recirculated to the extractor, limiting make-up gas demand.

6

Finishing & Packing

The collected tiger nut oil is polished by filtration as needed and packed to the required specification.

Key Features

  • Enzyme-Assisted (EAE) — Relevant Screening Fit

Best-ranked route for tiger nut tubers: rank 57 of 100 in Mechotech's enzyme-assisted extraction screening, using water, enzyme and pH control. Ranks are directional screening priorities, not measured yield, ROI or plant guarantees.

  • 3 Candidate Routes

Routes screened for tiger nut tubers: Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE) — relevant, rank 61; Subcritical Water (SWE) — exploratory, rank 73; Enzyme-Assisted (EAE) — relevant, rank 57. Each route has its own process tab above.

  • 2-Target Scope

Targets are assigned to routes in the screening — tiger nut oil: Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE); starch and fiber: Subcritical Water (SWE) and Enzyme-Assisted (EAE) — so each route’s steps name only the target it is screened for.

  • Parameters Fixed After Pilot Trials

Recovery of tiger nut oil, and starch and fiber, selectivity, solvent or water duty, quality and cleaning are measured in pilot trials, starting with small-scale feed trials, before final plant parameters are fixed.
