Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE)Subcritical Water Extraction (SWE)Enzyme-Assisted Extraction (EAE)

Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey extraction plants that process chia seeds to recover ALA-rich oil and mucilage. We supply the machinery for the route selected after screening — raw-material preparation, extraction, separation, concentration or recovery, and drying or collection — configured to the target specification. Mechotech's technology screening assigns routes by target — ALA-rich oil: Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE); mucilage: Subcritical Water (SWE) and Enzyme-Assisted (EAE); the best-ranked route overall is Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE) (high-priority screening, rank 29 of 100).

For chia seeds with ALA-rich oil and mucilage as the target, there are 3 candidate technologies: Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE), Subcritical Water Extraction (SWE) and Enzyme-Assisted Extraction (EAE). By route — Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE) for ALA-rich oil: high-priority screening, rank 29 of 100, CO₂; optional ethanol modifier; Subcritical Water (SWE) for mucilage: exploratory screening, rank 79 of 100, pressurized water; Enzyme-Assisted (EAE) for mucilage: relevant screening, rank 61 of 100, water, enzyme and pH control. For the best-ranked route, Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE), the screening flags: nonpolar fraction preferred; polar targets may need modifier and separate validation. These are screening candidates rather than guarantees: the final technology, operating parameters and plant configuration are established during process development and pilot validation. Product-contact parts are built in SS 316L with CIP-cleanable design, and automation is configured to the project.

Manufacturing Process

Each extraction method follows a different process — pick a method to see its steps.

1

Raw-Material Conditioning

Chia seeds are cleaned and conditioned so ala-rich oil is accessible to supercritical CO₂; moisture and particle size are set during process development.

2

Extraction Vessel Loading

Conditioned chia seeds are charged into the high-pressure extraction vessel.

3

Supercritical CO₂ Extraction

Supercritical CO₂ passes through the charge and dissolves ala-rich oil; an ethanol modifier can be evaluated where polar fractions are also required, and operating pressure and temperature are set in process development.

4

Separator Collection

Pressure is reduced in separator stages so the extracted ala-rich oil drops out of the CO₂ and is collected.

5

CO₂ Recycle

Gaseous CO₂ is re-liquefied and recirculated to the extractor, limiting make-up gas demand.

6

Finishing & Packing

The collected ala-rich oil is polished by filtration as needed and packed to the required specification.

Key Features

  • Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE) — High-Priority Screening Fit

Best-ranked route for chia seeds: rank 29 of 100 in Mechotech's supercritical CO₂ extraction screening, using CO₂; optional ethanol modifier. Ranks are directional screening priorities, not measured yield, ROI or plant guarantees.

  • 3 Candidate Routes

Routes screened for chia seeds: Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE) — high-priority, rank 29; Subcritical Water (SWE) — exploratory, rank 79; Enzyme-Assisted (EAE) — relevant, rank 61. Each route has its own process tab above.

  • 2-Target Scope

Targets are assigned to routes in the screening — ALA-rich oil: Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE); mucilage: Subcritical Water (SWE) and Enzyme-Assisted (EAE) — so each route’s steps name only the target it is screened for.

  • Parameters Fixed After Pilot Trials

Recovery of ALA-rich oil and mucilage, selectivity, solvent or water duty, quality and cleaning are measured in pilot trials, starting with small-scale feed trials, before final plant parameters are fixed.

  • SS 316L Hygienic Construction

Product-contact surfaces are SS 316L and CIP-cleanable, in a hygienic design suited to food, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical supply chains; PLC-SCADA automation with recipe control can be configured to the project scope.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a chia seed extraction plant for ALA-rich oil and mucilage?
It is a turnkey Mechotech plant that processes chia seeds to recover ALA-rich oil and mucilage. The plant covers raw-material preparation, extraction, separation, concentration or fraction collection, and drying or packing, and is configured to the target specification. It sits within Mechotech's wider range of herbal extraction plants.
Which plant part or feed form does the chia seed plant process?
The candidate feedstock is chia seeds. The target extract is ALA-rich oil and mucilage.
Which extraction technologies are suitable for chia seeds?
This feedstock has 3 candidate technologies: Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE) (high-priority screening), Subcritical Water Extraction (SWE) (exploratory screening) and Enzyme-Assisted Extraction (EAE) (relevant screening). See the related pages on supercritical CO₂ extraction, subcritical water extraction and enzyme-assisted extraction. These are screening candidates, not guarantees of yield, purity or recovery; the route is confirmed through process development and pilot validation. In Mechotech's technology screening these candidates are ranked directionally — high-priority: Supercritical CO₂ Extraction for ala-rich oil (rank 29 of 100); relevant: Enzyme-Assisted Extraction for mucilage (rank 61 of 100); exploratory: Subcritical Water Extraction for mucilage (rank 79 of 100).
