Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey extraction plants that process olive pomace to recover hydroxytyrosol and olive oil. We supply the machinery for the route selected after screening — raw-material preparation, extraction, separation, concentration or recovery, and drying or collection — configured to the target specification. Mechotech's technology screening assigns routes by target — hydroxytyrosol: Counter-Current (CCE), Ultrasound (UAE), Hybrid and Microwave (MAE); olive oil: Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE); the best-ranked route overall is Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE) (high-priority screening, rank 1 of 100).

For olive pomace with hydroxytyrosol and olive oil as the target, there are 5 candidate technologies: Counter-Current Extraction (CCE), Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE), Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE), Hybrid Extraction and Microwave-Assisted Extraction (MAE). By route — Counter-Current (CCE) for hydroxytyrosol: high-priority screening, rank 3 of 100, ethanol/water or suitable food-grade solvent; Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE) for olive oil: high-priority screening, rank 1 of 100, CO₂; optional ethanol modifier; Ultrasound (UAE) for hydroxytyrosol: high-priority screening, rank 3 of 100, ethanol/water or water; Hybrid for hydroxytyrosol: high-priority screening, rank 3 of 100, sequence selected by target; Microwave (MAE) for hydroxytyrosol: high-priority screening, rank 3 of 100, ethanol/water or water. For the best-ranked route, Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE), the screening flags: nonpolar fraction preferred; polar targets may need modifier and separate validation. These are screening candidates rather than guarantees: the final technology, operating parameters and plant configuration are established during process development and pilot validation. Product-contact parts are built in SS 316L with CIP-cleanable design, and automation is configured to the project.

Manufacturing Process

Each extraction method follows a different process — pick a method to see its steps.

1

Raw-Material Preparation

Olive pomace is cleaned and size-reduced so hydroxytyrosol can be reached by the extraction medium; particle size and moisture are set during process development.

2

Counter-Current Loading

Prepared olive pomace is fed into a multi-stage solid–liquid counter-current extractor where fresh ethanol/water or a suitable food-grade solvent meets the most-depleted material.

3

Counter-Current Extraction

Solvent flows against the solids across stages to draw out hydroxytyrosol; bed flow and fines management are verified during pilot work.

4

Extract (Miscella) Collection

The hydroxytyrosol-bearing miscella is collected from the fresh-feed end while spent solids are discharged from the solvent-entry end.

5

Concentration & Solvent Recovery

Solvent is removed from the clarified hydroxytyrosol-bearing extract under vacuum and returned through a solvent-recovery loop; recovery performance is confirmed at pilot scale.

6

Standardisation & Drying

The hydroxytyrosol extract is assayed against the declared target specification and dried or supplied as a concentrate, according to the requirement.

Key Features

  • Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE) — High-Priority Screening Fit

Best-ranked route for olive pomace: rank 1 of 100 in Mechotech's supercritical CO₂ extraction screening, using CO₂; optional ethanol modifier. Ranks are directional screening priorities, not measured yield, ROI or plant guarantees.

  • Olive pomace — 5 Candidate Routes

Routes screened for olive pomace: Counter-Current (CCE) — high-priority, rank 3; Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE) — high-priority, rank 1; Ultrasound (UAE) — high-priority, rank 3; Hybrid — high-priority, rank 3; Microwave (MAE) — high-priority, rank 3. Each route has its own process tab above.

  • 2-Target Scope

Targets are assigned to routes in the screening — hydroxytyrosol: Counter-Current (CCE), Ultrasound (UAE), Hybrid and Microwave (MAE); olive oil: Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE) — so each route’s steps name only the target it is screened for.

  • Parameters Fixed After Pilot Trials

Recovery of hydroxytyrosol and olive oil, selectivity, solvent or water duty, quality and cleaning are measured in pilot trials, starting with small-scale feed trials, before final plant parameters are fixed.
