Turmeric — Leaf Oil

Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey leaves oils distillation plants for Turmeric leaves. The product tree lists the entry as Turmeric (Leaves) under Leaves Oils Distillation Plants, and Mechotech’s legacy page for the Turmeric Leaf Oil Distillation Plant describes the oil of the turmeric (Curcuma longa) leaf as distinct from the rhizome oil, dominated on that page by ar-turmerone (50–65%) with α- and β-turmerone, from fresh or dried leaf. The Sureka Life Sciences (SLS) catalogue lists Turmeric Leaves Distillation with Curcuma longa as the botanical source but gives a different composition, led by monoterpenes such as alpha-phellandrene and terpinolene, so the two sources disagree on the marker. This page is the leaf route; the rhizome oil, rhizome extract and CO2 routes are on separate pages. The exact leaf form is confirmed with the client before the plant is configured.

Mechotech’s Turmeric plant is configured around the raw material and the target oil. It is built in SS 316L with integrated condensers and oil–water separation, PLC-based automation and full documentation, and is delivered as a commissioned turnkey system. The distillation mode and operating parameters are established during process development and pilot validation.

Manufacturing Process

1

Raw Material Preparation

Turmeric leaves are cleaned and sorted, and size-reduced where required, so that the charge packs evenly in the still and steam can reach the leaf tissue; whether the leaf is fresh or dried, and the particle size, are set during process development.

2

Charging & Distillation

The prepared Turmeric charge is loaded into the SS 316L still and distilled by steam, hydro, vacuum or pressure distillation, selected during process development for the volatility and heat-sensitivity of the target oil.

3

Condensation

Vapours pass through a multi-tube condenser with chilled-water circulation, condensing the oil and hydrosol.

4

Oil–Water Separation

Condensate is separated in a stainless-steel Florentine flask; the oil is collected and the hydrosol is drawn off and can be recovered as a co-product.

5

Polishing & Drying

The crude oil is polish-filtered and dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate or by vacuum to remove residual moisture.

6

Quality Control

Each batch is sampled for GC-MS profile and physical parameters — specific gravity, refractive index, optical rotation — against the client’s specification.

Major Plant Equipment

  • Leaf cleaning and size-reduction system
  • Perforated basket or false-bottom charge support
  • SS 316L distillation still / extractor
  • Multi-tube condenser with chilled-water circulation
  • Stainless-steel Florentine flask (oil–water separator)
  • Polish filtration system
  • Drying unit (anhydrous sodium sulphate or vacuum)
  • CIP system
  • PLC-based automation and instrumentation

Plant Output

Turmeric essential oilAromatic hydrosol (co-product)

Applications

  • Skin-care and cosmetic products
  • Aromatherapy and perfumery
  • Active packaging and preservation (catalogue use area)
  • Pharmaceutical and food uses (per Mechotech’s Turmeric (Leaves) Oil Distillation Plant legacy page)

Key Features

  • SS 316L Construction

Product-contact surfaces are SS 316L for corrosion resistance and product purity, with CIP capability between batches.

  • Efficient Condensation

Multi-tube condensers with chilled-water circulation condense the volatile oil and hydrosol and limit loss of volatile top-notes.

  • Configurable Distillation Mode

The still is configured for steam, hydro, vacuum or pressure distillation, selected during process development for the herb charge and the target oil.

  • Hydrosol Recovery

Integrated oil–water separation allows the aromatic hydrosol to be drawn off and recovered as a co-product.

  • Scalable Capacity

Plants are configured to requirement from pilot scale upward, with modular expansion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Mechotech supply the complete machinery for Turmeric?
Yes. Mechotech supplies the complete turnkey plant for Turmeric — engineered, fabricated at our Hyderabad facility, installed and commissioned as a single integrated system. Final process parameters are established during process development and pilot validation.
What specification can the Turmeric plant achieve?
The plant is configured to the client’s target specification for Turmeric; the specification achieved is established during process development and pilot validation, and batch-release testing with certificate-of-analysis documentation is defined with the client.
What production capacities are available for the Turmeric plant?
Capacity for the Turmeric plant is configured to raw-material supply, confirmed buyer volume and investment timeline, starting at pilot scale; a pilot plant is recommended to validate parameters before scaling.
Which end uses are listed for the Turmeric plant?
For this oil, the Sureka Life Sciences catalogue lists skincare and cosmetics, aromatherapy and perfumery, and active packaging and preservation among its application areas; these are catalogue use areas, not performance claims by Mechotech.
Which part of turmeric is processed on this page?
The leaves. The product tree lists Turmeric (Leaves) under Leaves Oils Distillation Plants, and Mechotech’s legacy page says the oil is distilled from the leaves rather than the rhizome. The exact form, fresh or dried, is confirmed with the client before the plant is configured.
How is Turmeric leaf oil produced in the plant?
The prepared Turmeric leaf charge is loaded into an SS 316L still and distilled by steam, hydro, vacuum or pressure distillation, selected for the volatility and heat-sensitivity of the target oil. Vapours are condensed in a multi-tube condenser, the oil and hydrosol are separated in a Florentine flask, and the crude oil is polish-filtered and dried before GC-MS and physical-parameter testing.
What does the oil contain, and why is no percentage stated?
The sources disagree. Mechotech’s legacy page gives ar-turmerone as dominant (50–65%) with α- and β-turmerone, while the Sureka Life Sciences catalogue lists a wide set of monoterpene ranges led by alpha-phellandrene and terpinolene (for example terpinolene about 8.8% to 71.2%). Neither is a delivered specification, so no percentage is stated here; the target oil specification is confirmed with the client.
Why is the catalogue CAS number not used here?
The Sureka Life Sciences entry for Turmeric Leaves Distillation gives CAS 8024-37-1, which the same catalogue also lists for its Turmeric Distillation entry (a rhizome oil). The sources do not explain the overlap, so no CAS number is stated on this page.
How does this page differ from the other turmeric pages?
Turmeric is the spice-oil distillation page, Turmeric Oil (CO2) and Turmeric Spent Marc Turmerone (CO₂) are CO2 routes, Curcumin is the curcuminoid extraction and Roots - Turmeric is the natural colour entry. This page is the leaf essential oil, so the part, the route and the product differ.
Which neighbouring plants does the product tree list with Turmeric (Leaves)?
Mechotech’s product tree lists these plants next to Turmeric (Leaves): Thyme and WinterGreen. The hub is Leaves Oils Distillation Plants.
