Lemon Grass Leaves Oils Distillation Plants — Mechotech

Lemon Grass

Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey leaves oils distillation plants for Lemon Grass. The product tree lists the feed as grass, and Mechotech’s lemongrass case study names fresh leaves of Cymbopogon flexuosus / Cymbopogon citratus distilled by steam. The plant recovers lemongrass essential oil and hydrosol by distillation for the fragrance, flavour, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, aromatherapy and personal-care industries. The Sureka Life Sciences (SLS) catalogue lists Lemon Grass Leaves Distillation with the genus Cymbopogon as the botanical source and citral as the marker compound. A delivered lemongrass distillation plant is described in the case study linked on this page.

Mechotech’s Lemon Grass plant is configured around a bulky, moist grass feed and the target oil. It is built in SS 316L with integrated condensers and oil–water separation, PLC-based automation and full documentation, and is delivered as a commissioned turnkey system. The line is built around cleaning and chopping the grass, as described in Mechotech’s lemongrass case study; the distillation mode and operating parameters are established during process development and pilot validation.

Manufacturing Process

1

Raw Material Preparation

Fresh lemongrass is cleaned, inspected and chopped into uniform lengths to improve steam penetration, as described in Mechotech’s lemongrass case study.

2

Charging & Distillation

The prepared lemongrass charge is loaded into the SS 316L still and distilled by steam, selected during process development together with hydro, vacuum or pressure options for the volatility and heat-sensitivity of the oil. The case study describes steam passing through the charge in stainless-steel distillation vessels.

3

Condensation

Vapours pass through a multi-tube condenser with chilled-water circulation, condensing the oil and hydrosol.

4

Oil–Water Separation

Condensate is separated in a stainless-steel Florentine flask; the oil is collected and the hydrosol is drawn off and can be recovered as a co-product.

5

Polishing & Drying

The crude oil is polish-filtered and dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate or by vacuum to remove residual moisture.

6

Quality Control

Each batch is checked for citral content by GC-MS and for physical parameters — specific gravity, refractive index, optical rotation — against the client’s specification. The Mechotech lemongrass case study also lists moisture, colour and organoleptic checks.

Applications

  • Perfumery
  • Cosmetics
  • Soaps and detergents
  • Aromatherapy
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Herbal products
  • Food flavouring
  • Household cleaners

Key Features

  • SS 316L Construction

Product-contact surfaces are SS 316L for corrosion resistance and product purity, with CIP capability between batches.

  • Efficient Condensation

Multi-tube condensers with chilled-water circulation condense the volatile oil and hydrosol and limit loss of volatile top-notes.

  • Chopped-Grass Distillation

The line is configured for a chopped fresh-grass charge, with steam distribution through the biomass, as described in Mechotech’s lemongrass case study; other distillation modes can be configured during process development.

  • Hydrosol Recovery

Integrated oil–water separation allows the aromatic hydrosol to be drawn off and recovered as a co-product.

  • Scalable Capacity

Plants are configured to requirement from pilot scale upward, with modular expansion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Mechotech supply the complete machinery for Lemon Grass?
Yes. Mechotech supplies the complete turnkey plant for Lemon Grass — engineered, fabricated at our Hyderabad facility, installed and commissioned as a single integrated system. Final process parameters are established during process development and pilot validation.
What specification can the Lemon Grass plant achieve?
The plant is configured to the client’s target specification for Lemon Grass; the specification achieved is established during process development and pilot validation, and each batch is released with batch-release testing and certificate-of-analysis documentation.
What production capacities are available for the Lemon Grass plant?
Capacity for the Lemon Grass plant is configured to raw-material supply, confirmed buyer volume and investment timeline, starting at pilot scale; a pilot plant is recommended to validate parameters before scaling. For reference, the Mechotech lemongrass case study states a project objective of processing 20 MT/day of fresh lemongrass; that is the design objective of that delivered project, not a standard capacity.
Which end uses are listed for the Lemon Grass plant?
The Mechotech lemongrass case study lists perfumery, cosmetics, soaps and detergents, aromatherapy, pharmaceuticals, herbal products, food flavouring and household cleaners as the uses of its oil.
Which part of Lemon Grass is processed in the distillation plant?
The product tree lists Lemon Grass as grass, under Leaves Oils Distillation Plants, and the SLS entry is named Lemon Grass Leaves Distillation. Mechotech’s lemongrass case study lists the plant part used as fresh leaves, with a moisture content of 65–75% for that project, chopped into uniform lengths before steam distillation. The exact feed form (fresh or partly dried grass) is confirmed with the client before the plant is configured.
How is Lemon Grass oil produced in the plant?
The fresh grass is cleaned and chopped, loaded into an SS 316L still and distilled, with steam as the route described in Mechotech’s case study. Vapours are condensed in a multi-tube condenser, the oil and hydrosol are separated in a Florentine flask, and the crude oil is polish-filtered and dried before GC-MS citral and physical-parameter testing.
Has Mechotech delivered a lemongrass oil distillation plant?
Yes. The Lemongrass Essential Oil Distillation Plant case study describes a steam-distillation line with raw-material reception, cleaning and chopping, steam distillation, condensation, Florentine oil–water separation, oil filtration and quality analysis, producing lemongrass oil, high-citral lemongrass oil and lemongrass hydrosol. The parameters for a specific new plant are established during process development and pilot validation.
Which lemongrass species and marker does the plant process?
The case study names Cymbopogon flexuosus / Cymbopogon citratus and citral (geranial and neral) as the target. The Sureka Life Sciences catalogue lists only the genus Cymbopogon, with citral as the marker and an offering grade of 40–75% citral for its own product. The species and the citral level the client needs are confirmed during process development.
How does Lemon Grass differ from the Citronella page?
Mechotech’s citronella article describes citronella oil as coming from two other lemongrass species, Cymbopogon winterianus (Java type) and Cymbopogon nardus (Ceylon type), with citronellal, geraniol and citronellol as the markers. This page follows the citral-bearing lemongrass oil of the lemongrass case study. See Citronella if your target oil is the citronellal-type oil.
Which other aromatic-grass pages and routes does Mechotech list?
Palmrosa is listed as grass on the same distillation route, and Jamarosa is a separate page with its own Sureka Life Sciences entry. Other routes for related raw materials are listed separately: Palmarosa Grass Geraniol-Rich Oil (CO₂) and, for lemongrass leaves, Lemongrass Leaf Phenolic Acids Extract, which recovers phenolic acids rather than an essential oil. The product tree lists Lemon Eucalyptus and Lemon Verbena next to Lemon Grass; the hub is Leaves Oils Distillation Plants.
