Bay Leaf Oil (CO₂)

Extraction Technologies

Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE)

Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey extraction plants that process bay leaves to recover cineole-rich oil by supercritical CO₂ extraction. We supply the complete machinery — raw-material preparation, high-pressure extraction, separator collection, CO₂ recycle and finishing — configured to the target specification. Bay leaf oil is also produced conventionally by steam distillation; this page describes the candidate CO₂ route for the cineole-rich oil target. Candidate extraction technologies for cineole-rich oil: Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE).

For bay leaves with cineole-rich oil as the target, there is one candidate technology: Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE). Supercritical CO₂ is generally suited to non-polar fractions such as oils, with an ethanol modifier evaluated only where polar fractions are also needed. These are screening candidates rather than guarantees: the final technology, operating parameters and plant configuration are established during process development and pilot validation. Product-contact parts are built in SS 316L with CIP-cleanable design, and automation is configured to the project.

Manufacturing Process

Each extraction method follows a different process — pick a method to see its steps.

1

Raw-Material Conditioning

Bay leaves are cleaned and size-reduced so the cineole-rich oil is accessible to supercritical CO₂; moisture and particle size are set during process development.

2

Extraction Vessel Loading

Conditioned bay leaves are charged into the high-pressure extraction vessel.

3

Supercritical CO₂ Extraction

Supercritical CO₂ passes through the charge and dissolves cineole-rich oil; an ethanol modifier can be evaluated where polar fractions are also required, and operating pressure and temperature are set in process development.

4

Separator Collection

Pressure is reduced in separator stages so the extracted cineole-rich oil drops out of the CO₂ and is collected.

5

CO₂ Recycle

Gaseous CO₂ is re-liquefied and recirculated to the extractor, limiting make-up gas demand.

6

Finishing & Packing

The collected cineole-rich oil is polished by filtration as needed and packed to the required specification.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bay leaf oil extraction plant?
It is a turnkey Mechotech plant for bay leaves, with cineole-rich oil as the target extract. The candidate technologies are Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE); the final route is confirmed through process development and pilot validation. It sits within Mechotech's wider range of CO₂ extraction plants.
Which feedstock and target extract does the bay leaf oil plant cover?
The listed feedstock is bay leaves. The target extract is cineole-rich oil.
Does Mechotech supply the complete machinery for bay leaf oil extraction?
Yes. Mechotech supplies the complete turnkey plant for bay leaf oil extraction — engineered, fabricated at our Hyderabad facility, installed, and commissioned as a single integrated system.
What specification can the bay leaf oil plant be configured to deliver?
The plant is configured to a customer-declared specification for cineole-rich oil. No fixed purity, assay percentage or yield is claimed until pilot results are available; batch-release testing and certificate-of-analysis documentation are set up against the agreed specification.
What production capacities are available for the bay leaf oil plant?
Mechotech builds bay leaf oil plants from pilot systems for product development to commercial-scale plants. Capacity is selected from raw-material supply, confirmed buyer volume, and investment timeline; we recommend a pilot plant to validate parameters before scaling.
Which industries use the bay leaf oil plant?
Pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food and flavour, cosmetic, and fragrance manufacturers use Mechotech plants for consistent, compliant production.
Which extraction technology is a candidate for bay leaves?
For bay leaves with cineole-rich oil as the target, the candidate technology is Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (SCFE). See the related pages on supercritical CO₂ extraction. These are screening candidates, not guarantees of yield, purity or recovery; the route is confirmed through process development and pilot validation. In Mechotech's technology screening, Supercritical CO₂ Extraction (rank 47 of 100) is ranked directionally as a relevant candidate. Ranks are directional screening priorities at method-family level, not measured yield, ROI or plant guarantees. Steam distillation of bay leaves is the conventional route for this oil; this page presents the candidate CO₂ route for the cineole-rich oil target.
How does the bay leaf oil extraction process work?
Each listed technology has its own process tab on this page (Supercritical CO₂ (SCFE)). The steps run from raw-material preparation and extraction through separation, concentration or recovery and standardisation, with parameters set during process development and pilot validation.
What equipment does the bay leaf oil extraction plant include?
The equipment follows the selected route and includes raw-material cleaning and size-reduction system; supercritical CO₂ extraction vessels; CO₂ pump, heat exchangers and chiller; separator vessels; CO₂ recovery / recycle system; optional ethanol-modifier dosing skid; product collection vessels and polish filtration; CIP (clean-in-place) system. The full list is shown under Major Plant Equipment.
Why is supercritical CO₂ a candidate technology for bay leaf cineole-rich oil?
Supercritical CO₂ is generally suited to non-polar fractions such as oils and waxes, which is why it is a candidate technology for cineole-rich oil. Where polar fractions are also needed, an ethanol modifier can be evaluated and validated separately.
Which related Mechotech extraction pages cover the same material or target?
Basil leaf oil by the same route is covered on the Basil Leaf Oil (CO₂) page.
Is a pilot trial recommended for bay leaf oil extraction?
Yes. Mechotech's technology screening recommends starting with small-scale feed trials to measure recovery, selectivity, solvent or water duty, quality and cleaning before pilot and commercial plant sizes are fixed; capacity is configured to requirement.
