Spearmint

Spearmint
Purity Levels
Steam-distilled essential oil; carvone typically the dominant monoterpene ketone in the oil composition (commonly cited in general literature in the region of 50–70%, confirmed batch-to-batch by GC-MS rather than guaranteed as a fixed spec)
Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey steam-distillation plants for Spearmint (Mentha spicata), converting freshly harvested leaves and flowering tops into a carvone-rich essential oil. We supply the complete machinery — feedstock preparation, steam/hydro-distillation, condensation, oil-water separation, polishing and quality control — for the food-flavour, confectionery, oral-care, and fragrance industries. Spearmint's carvone-dominant chemistry gives it a distinct, sweeter aroma from peppermint's menthol profile, anchoring a genuinely separate flavour-industry market in chewing gum, candy and select beverage applications.
Mechotech's Spearmint plant is engineered around the same fresh, high-moisture leafy biomass handling that mint distillation demands, but tuned to protect a different target molecule: carvone, a monoterpene ketone rather than the monoterpene alcohol that dominates peppermint oil. The still, condenser bank and Florentine separators are sized for rapid, repeatable turnover of large seasonal leaf volumes, since spearmint growers typically deliver freshly cut material that should be distilled promptly to protect oil yield and the characteristic sweet, warm carvone note buyers expect. Because spearmint serves a distinct commercial market from peppermint — flavour-house buyers for chewing gum and confectionery, rather than the broader pharma and oral-care range peppermint covers — Mechotech engineers each plant around the buyer's confirmed offtake before finalising capacity, since spearmint contracts are frequently tied to a specific flavour-house specification rather than a general commodity-oil sale. Built in SS 316L with high-surface-area condensers, chilled-water circulation, and PLC-based automation, each plant is delivered as a commissioned turnkey system, with every batch confirmed by GC-MS and physical parameters before release.

Manufacturing Process
Raw Material Reception & Wilting
Freshly harvested spearmint leaves and flowering tops are received, inspected, and lightly field-wilted where required to reduce surface moisture ahead of charging.
Charging & Steam Distillation
The prepared leaf/flower charge is loaded into the SS 316L still on a perforated false-bottom or basket system and distilled by direct steam or hydrodistillation, timed to fully volatilise the carvone-rich oil without prolonging exposure that flattens its characteristic sweet top-note.
Condensation
Vapours pass through a high-surface-area multi-tube condenser with chilled-water circulation, condensing the volatile oil and aromatic hydrosol together for downstream separation.
Oil–Water Separation
Condensate is separated in a stainless-steel Florentine flask; the lighter spearmint oil is decanted off while the hydrosol is drawn off separately and can be recovered as a co-product.
Polishing & Drying
The crude oil is polish-filtered and dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate (or under vacuum) to remove residual moisture and fine particulate before packing.
Quality Control
Each batch of spearmint oil is verified by GC-MS for carvone and companion-compound profile, plus physical parameters (specific gravity, refractive index, optical rotation) before release with a certificate of analysis.

Key Features
High-Throughput Still Design
Stills and loading systems are sized for spearmint's high seasonal harvest volumes, supporting rapid batch turnover during peak cutting season.
SS 316L Construction
All product-contact surfaces are SS 316L for corrosion resistance and product purity, with CIP capability between batches.
Efficient Condensation & Carvone Recovery
High-surface-area multi-tube condensers with chilled-water circulation maximise recovery of the carvone-rich oil fraction and minimise losses of volatile top-notes.
Hydrosol Recovery
Integrated Florentine separation allows recovery of spearmint hydrosol as a co-product.
GC-MS Batch Verification
Every batch is verified against carvone and companion-compound profile before release, supporting consistent flavour-industry quality.
Scalable Seasonal Capacity
Plants are configured from pilot to commercial scale with modular expansion to match harvest volume growth.
