Leaf (Pelargonium graveolens) — citronellol- and geraniol-rich alcohol oil

Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey leaf oils distillation plants for Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), a straightforward leaf-based steam distillation whose oil chemistry is genuinely distinct from the sesquiterpene-dominant profiles of root and heartwood oils: geranium oil's character comes from an alcohol-rich fraction — citronellol and geraniol are its well-documented dominant constituents — giving it the bright, rose-like top and mid notes valued across fragrance and cosmetic formulation. As a geranium oil extraction plant manufacturer, we supply the complete machinery — leaf handling, steam distillation, condensation, and oil-water separation — to process fresh or wilted geranium leaves into a consistent essential oil for the perfumery, cosmetic, and flavour industries.

Mechotech's Geranium plant is engineered around the straightforward, well-established leaf-distillation process for Pelargonium graveolens: unlike vetiver's slow root distillation or sandalwood's long heartwood cycle, geranium leaf releases its oil readily under moderate steam distillation, making cycle times comparable to other common leaf oils. What distinguishes geranium within Mechotech's essential-oil range is its chemistry rather than its process — the oil is dominated by monoterpene alcohols (citronellol and geraniol being the well-documented major constituents), a genuinely different profile from the sesquiterpene-heavy oils of vetiver, patchouli, and sandalwood, giving geranium its characteristic bright, rosy note rather than a woody or earthy base character. Built in SS 316L with integrated condensers, oil-water separation, PLC-based automation, and full documentation, each plant is delivered as a commissioned turnkey system.

Manufacturing Process

1

Leaf Reception & Preparation

Fresh or lightly wilted geranium leaves and tender stems are cleaned of foreign matter and, where required, coarsely chopped to improve steam penetration ahead of charging.

2

Charging & Distillation

The prepared leaf charge is loaded into the SS 316L still and steam- or hydro-distilled. Geranium leaf releases its alcohol-rich oil readily, so cycle times follow a standard leaf-distillation profile rather than the extended cycles required for root or heartwood feedstock.

3

Condensation

Vapours pass through an efficient multi-tube condenser with chilled-water circulation, condensing the volatile oil and hydrosol.

4

Oil–Water Separation

Condensate is separated in a stainless-steel Florentine flask; the essential oil is collected while the hydrosol is drawn off and can be recovered as a co-product valued for its own light rose-geranium aroma.

5

Polishing & Drying

The crude oil is polish-filtered and dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate (or by vacuum) to remove residual moisture.

6

Quality Control

Each batch of geranium oil is verified by GC-MS profiling of its citronellol/geraniol alcohol fraction alongside physical parameters (specific gravity, refractive index, optical rotation) before release.

Applications

  • Fine fragrance and perfumery (rosy top/mid-note applications)
  • Cosmetic and personal-care formulations
  • Aromatherapy and wellness applications
  • Soap and household-fragrance compounding
  • Flavour-house compounding for floral/rosy notes
  • Export to regulated-market fragrance and cosmetic buyers

Key Features

  • Standard Leaf-Distillation Cycle

Geranium's alcohol-rich oil releases readily under moderate steam distillation, so the still is engineered for efficient throughput rather than the extended cycles vetiver or sandalwood require.

  • SS 316L Construction

All product-contact surfaces are SS 316L for corrosion resistance and product purity, with CIP capability between batches.

  • Efficient Condensation

High-surface-area multi-tube condensers with chilled-water circulation maximise recovery of geranium's more volatile alcohol-rich fraction.

  • Alcohol-Chemistry Oil Profile

Standardised around citronellol and geraniol as the dominant constituents, a genuinely distinct chemical profile from the sesquiterpene-heavy oils elsewhere in Mechotech's distillation range.

  • Hydrosol Recovery

Integrated separation allows recovery of the aromatic hydrosol as a co-product.

  • Scalable Capacity

Plants are configured to requirement from pilot scale upward, with modular expansion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What gives geranium oil its characteristic rosy aroma?
Geranium oil's aroma is built on an alcohol-rich fraction — citronellol and geraniol are its well-documented dominant constituents — giving it the bright, rose-like character that fragrance and cosmetic buyers value. This is a genuinely different chemical profile from the sesquiterpene-dominant oils (vetiver, patchouli, sandalwood) elsewhere in Mechotech's distillation range.
Is geranium leaf distillation faster than root or heartwood distillation?
Yes. Geranium's alcohol-rich oil releases readily from the leaf under moderate steam distillation, so cycle times follow a standard leaf-oil profile. This is a genuine process contrast with feedstocks like vetiver root or sandalwood heartwood, both of which require substantially extended distillation cycles to fully release their oil.
Does Mechotech supply the complete machinery for Geranium oil distillation?
Yes. Mechotech supplies the complete turnkey plant for Geranium — leaf preparation, distillation, condensation, and oil-water separation — engineered, fabricated at our Hyderabad facility, installed, and commissioned as a single integrated system.
Is this the same as Mechotech's Rose Geranium plant?
This page covers Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) as a general leaf-distillation product line. Mechotech separately lists a Rose Geranium distillation plant for buyers specifically targeting that trade name and its associated market positioning; the underlying steam-distillation process and core equipment are similar, so buyers should clarify their target market segment and naming convention when requesting a quotation.
What production capacities are available for the Geranium oil plant?
Mechotech builds Geranium plants from pilot systems for product development to commercial-scale plants. We recommend a pilot plant to confirm the citronellol/geraniol balance for your leaf lot before scaling.
Which industries use geranium oil, and what quality control is applied?
Fragrance and cosmetic manufacturers are the largest buyers of geranium oil, valuing its rosy top and mid notes, alongside aromatherapy, soap, and flavour-house buyers. Each batch is verified by GC-MS profiling of its alcohol fraction alongside physical parameters (specific gravity, refractive index, optical rotation) before release.
Who supplies geranium oil extraction plants and equipment?
Mechotech is a geranium oil extraction plant manufacturer and equipment supplier, engineering and fabricating the complete distillation line — still, condenser, and Florentine separator — at our Hyderabad facility for buyers in India and export markets.
What material of construction and compliance does the Geranium plant meet?
Product-contact parts are built in SS 316L with CIP cleaning, engineered to GMP and IFRA-aligned hygienic-design norms, with documentation support for buyers exporting into regulated fragrance and cosmetic markets. As with all Mechotech distillation lines, layout and automation level — manual through fully automatic PLC-SCADA — are configured to the buyer's requirement and budget.
