Grinds - Coffee Natural Colour Extraction Plants — Mechotech

Grinds - Coffee

Mechotech designs and manufactures turnkey natural colour extraction plants for coffee grinds. In the Mechotech catalogue, Grinds - Coffee is listed in the Brown Colour group alongside Bark - Oak Bark / Birch, Hulls - Walnut, Roots - Dandelion, Plant - Yellow Dock, Woody Stems - Ivy, Shoots - Golden Rod and Leaves - Tea / Sumac. Mechotech’s article on coffee grounds describes the brown as melanoidins, tannins and chlorogenic-acid derivatives — water-soluble, stable across a wide pH range and heat-tolerant.

Mechotech’s coffee grinds plant is configured around the water-soluble brown pigments and the target colour extract. It is built in SS 316L with integrated solvent recovery, automation and full documentation, and is delivered as a commissioned turnkey system. Because the pigments are robust, extraction is centred on hot-water leaching, with mild alkali as an option to raise yield; the route is established during process development and pilot validation.

Manufacturing Process

1

Raw Material Preparation

Spent coffee grounds are collected, dried and screened so that the feed is uniform and free of foreign matter.

2

Extraction

The prepared grounds are extracted with hot water, or with food-grade solvent where the route requires it, in closed jacketed SS 316L extractors over multiple cycles; mild alkali can be evaluated to raise yield.

3

Filtration

The extract (miscella) is clarified through a plate-and-frame filter press followed by cartridge polish filters.

4

Concentration & Solvent Recovery

The miscella is concentrated in a falling-film / vacuum evaporator, with solvent recovered through the condenser return system so that heat exposure of the pigment stays low.

5

Standardisation

The concentrate is assayed for colour strength and adjusted to the declared target specification before the final finishing step.

6

Drying & Quality Control

The standardised Coffee Grinds extract is spray- or vacuum-dried where a powder is required, then released after the agreed assay, residual-solvent, heavy-metal, microbial and moisture tests.

Applications

  • Natural colour and dye ingredient supply
  • Food and beverage colour applications (subject to approval of the specific colour in each market)
  • Cosmetic and personal-care colour applications
  • Nutraceutical and Ayurvedic / herbal formulations
  • Pharmaceutical standardised ingredient supply

Key Features

  • SS 316L Construction

Electropolished SS 316L product-contact surfaces with CIP operation between batches.

  • Closed-Loop Solvent Recovery

Integrated condenser-return recovery reuses solvent between batches and reduces solvent loss.

  • Robust Brown Pigment Recovery

The brown pigments are water-soluble and stable across a broad pH range, so extraction does not need the acid protection that anthocyanin colours require.

  • Standardised to Specification

In-process and batch-release assay are used to check the finished extract against its declared target specification.

  • Gentle Concentration

Vacuum concentration keeps heat exposure low for temperature-sensitive colour compounds.

  • Scalable Batch Capacity

Plants are configured to requirement from pilot scale upward, with modular expansion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Mechotech supply the complete machinery for Grinds - Coffee?
Yes. Mechotech supplies the complete turnkey plant for Grinds - Coffee — engineered, fabricated at our Hyderabad facility, installed and commissioned as a single integrated system. Final process parameters are established during process development and pilot validation.
What specification can the Grinds - Coffee plant achieve?
The plant is configured to the client’s target specification for Grinds - Coffee; the specification achieved is established during process development and pilot validation, and each batch is released with batch-release testing and certificate-of-analysis documentation.
What production capacities are available for the Grinds - Coffee plant?
Capacity for the Grinds - Coffee plant is configured to raw-material supply, confirmed buyer volume and investment timeline, starting at pilot scale; a pilot plant is recommended to validate parameters before scaling.
Which raw material is processed in the Coffee Grinds plant?
The catalogue lists coffee grinds, and Mechotech’s colour article describes spent coffee grounds. Whether fresh roasted grounds or spent grounds are used is confirmed with the client, since the colour and the process depend on the roast and prior brewing.
What gives coffee grounds their brown colour?
Mainly melanoidins formed by the Maillard reaction during roasting, together with tannins and chlorogenic-acid derivatives. They are large, water-soluble molecules, so the brown does not shift hue with pH. Read more in Brown Colour Extraction from Coffee Grounds.
How does this page differ from Mechotech’s other coffee pages?
This page covers coffee grinds as a brown natural colour source. Coffee Spent Grounds Extract targets bioactive compounds such as chlorogenic acids from spent grounds, Coffee Oil (CO2) covers coffee oil, and Green Coffee Extract and Green Coffee Bean Extract cover unroasted beans.
Which related colour pages does Mechotech list with Grinds - Coffee?
Grinds - Coffee is part of the Brown Colour group (hub: Brown Colour) — related pages: Bark - Oak Bark / Birch; Hulls - Walnut; Roots - Dandelion; Plant - Yellow Dock; Woody Stems - Ivy; Shoots - Golden Rod; Leaves - Tea / Sumac. The overall catalogue hub is Natural Colour Extraction Plants.
